I didn't write that it was large, but obviously the 1000/1500 clocks suck up more juice. They are the same cards, so it's not magic... er it would be magic if the Ghz had the same power draw.

Not really.. improvements to the manufacturing process (resulting in lower leakage parts) and binning can all lead to chips that clock higher while using the same or less power with the same architecture.

Not really what?? None of what you wrote is applicable here. The two cards are identical. How would one clocked higher have the same draw as the lower clocked card?

The average rose 45 W and the peak rose 49 W (~25%). The AVERAGE rose 25%. I think that's a quite significant difference. The maximum number is irrelevant because you'll only reach it in FurMark and because manufacturers code power draw and clock limits into their drivers.

This should be enough to explain what I'm talking about. Two binned 7970 chips with manufacturing process improvements use on average 70 more watts than a normal 7970 Ghz.

Still the normal 7970 and the ghz edition is the same chip. No difference only the stock volts and the boost fuction.

The chips on the 7990 is high asic quality (probably 90%+) and they dont exist as a 7970

To obtain an efficient supply without over stressing the PSU you should work on a 80% rule. For example if you need 850W you should get a 1000W rated PSU.
