It seems unlikely that Skylake could be ready in a year and half from now. It also looks like the -E's keep getting pushed further back such that they are almost always either a process node or an architecture generation behind.

Es got pushed back because they don't have AMD competition(only the EPs have some competition from Opertron).

It does seem odd for someone to put Skylake in Q1 2015 as all Tick-Tocks from Conroe down to Haswell all had a gap of at least a year between generations(the closet is Penryn->Nehalem or Westemere->Sandy Bridge and both of those had a gap of 1 year+ a few days)

AMD's CPU code name actully have a pattern, Intel CPU code name aside from Sandy(original code name was the Hebrew word for Bridge)/Ivy Bridge(no reference) have just been random town names drawn out of a hat or have no reference at all.

Keep in mind the original AMD FX processors were "SLEDGEHAMMER" and "CLAWHAMMER". I think heavy construction equipment is a good follow up to the innovative technology of a sledgehammer.

The upcoming Kaveri APU's have GDDR5 support (from a probably reputable source), although I don't know if that means some will be DDR3 and some will be GDDR5?
Anyway, for the APU's just adding an L3 cache would be a good start, and really seems like that would be necessary for CPU performance if using GDDR5 memory.
An example of a situation that just a larger L3 cache won't particularly help is large image and video processing - you can't make a cache big enough to hold all of it, so it will require frequent visits out to main memory. Fortunately, that's the sort of stuff that can be hardware accelerated with the GPU (so we're back to GDDR5 memory being good!).

GDDR5 will probably only find its way into embedded solutions, as use of GDDR5 and DDR3 are mutually exclusive (cannot use both at the same time).

I guess it would depend on what the system will be used for. For example, in a low or mid-range gaming laptop or tablet, gaming performance will most likely be held back by the iGPU, so GDDR5 might be used.

This roadmap makes sense from what I've figured out so far about Intel's schedule, in most ways anyways. But it leaves me with other questions, too. Where is Broadwell? Would Intel be abandoning tick-tock and going straight to a new architecture on a new smaller process node?

Um, hello? This is INTEL we're talking about. lachen.gif I wouldn't be surprised if they could manufacture at 10nm now. I could at least guarantee they're working on it; and may be pouring literal billions (with a B) into the research for it.
