Anyone else interested in the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0?

I'm considering picking one up tomorrow and giving it a try. I currently have an IPad Mini 64 which I quite enjoy from a hardware perspective.

It's pro's are it's light weight and amazing battery life (best of any tablet currently).

It's cons are no Micro SD port and of course a reliance on ITunes (no drag and drop). Also screen res is on the low side.

My other issue is that AC3 support for video playback has been dropped from every video player app. Fortunately on my Mini, I have the older version of the App (and have not updated to the new update which removes audio support). The other Mini's in my house (That I bought my daughter and wife) weren't so lucky and a number of video files that work fine on mine play without audio on theirs frown.gif

Dolby is having a field day with these licensing issues.

The Note 8.0 has a decent resolution (1280x800, 189 PPI) and a very decent screen from a contrast and color reproduction mode. It's 1.6ghz quad core cpu and 2GB of RAM make it very speedy as well.

The 3 comments I have seen that are negative in various reviews:

Price: At $399 it is quite expensive. Mind you, add a 32GB Micro SD card (for a total of 48 GB of storage) for $20 and then compare it to the $429 32GB version of the Mini and it is roughly the same price point. Add a 64 GB card (Which it supports) and it comes in at 80 GB (the cheapest I have seen is $60) and then compare $460 vs $530 80GB/64GB for the largest Mini.

I personally don't have an issue with the price (I paid north of $500 for the Toshiba AT270 which was an amazing tablet). The stylus, full split screen functionality and IR Blaster add a lot of value to the device.

Apparently the back is slippery and not conducive to holding. I fail to see how this is a negative as there is no way I would use a tablet without a protective case.

Battery Life: This is a big one. From the various reviews, battery life comes in at roughly 7.5 hours. Compared to north of 12 hours for the Mini, that is a pretty big difference. (At least it charges via Micro USB rather than the older style proprietary connectors that Samsung used in it's prior tablets).

My personal difference is in reading apps (the Note 8.0 has a special reading mode as well that I am curious about). The Android ecosystem has numerous excellent E-Reading apps (Free) that do things that cannot be had in IOS.

The only two decent Apple reading apps are Stanza (which is old and likely to stop working eventually as IOS upgrades occur) and Marvin, which is excellent (although still lacking a couple of critical sorting features and textured backgrounds). Compared to Coolreader, they are somewhat far behind.

Anyone else have any thoughts on the device?

I'm also thinking of getting this for me & my wife. Is there a 32 Gb version for sale in the U.S.? I lke this than the iPad Mini. This is better looking, more powerful & stylus S Pen is an added bonus. I went to Best Buy yesterday but they're only selling the 16 Gb version.

I think its only 16GB but that's not really a big deal, add a 32GB or 64GB micro SD card.

That's what I thought. I like the LTE version (sold outside of the US) but I think I might get this 16 Gb one at Best Buy cuz I already have an iPhone 5 64 Gb. There's too many Apple products in the house (kids have iPods) I like to try the Android.

I was interested until I saw the price tag. For that price I would just pony up 50 more and get a 10 inch. It cost 100 more than I am willing to spend on a tablet of that size. This is mainly because I don't want to pay extra for features I do not want.

The price tag doesn't bother me. It is in the same range of the Mini (of which I bought 2). My only concern is the battery life. Going from a device that averages around 12 hours to a device that is just north of 7 hours is a big deal.

Sounds interesting. Too much gloss for me, though. If it were lighter, I might have considered it with a non-slippery case. At 340g which is around the same as the Nexus 7, a case would just add to the weight too much. Even the Nexus 7 hurts my wrist after an hour or so.

Just got it today at Best Buy. Looks nice. It's small enough to hold with one hand.
