New system. 7990 crossfire, worth waiting on PCIe 3.0?

Thread Starter
I'm gunna make a brand new beast system later in the year when the new Steamroller chips come out along with the 7990's.

Would pcie 2.0 vs pcie 3.0 make any difference? Is it worth waiting for the new 3.0 boards?

I don't follow when stuff is due to be released. So forgive me if I'm way off the money on release dates.

Just trying to figure out what the best approach would be, as I generally go balls out when building a new rig, and mines getting pretty dated now

UH Sorry to tell you but there is PCIE 3.0 now. Z77 has it with the right CPU.. So you don't have to wait for this..

^ He's right. All Intel Ivy-bridge processors and chipsets come with native PCI-E 3.0 but since you're interested in AMD, you'll be pleased to know that some of the newer 990FX boards already come with PCI-E 3.0 integrated (like the revision of the Asus 990FX Sabertooth). So I'm fairly certain the newer AMD revision boards that will launch with Steamroller will come with PCI-E 3.0 as standard.

That being said, for single GPU setups PCI-E 2.0 to 3.0 doesn't really make a difference but I've heard that there are marginal gains of perhaps ~5-10% to be had with dual-GPU cards like the HD7990 since they would obviously use up more bandwith. Besides, if you're upgrading after so long why not go for a newer board with all the newest technologies? You might as well, simply for the sake of having PCI-E 3.0 on it, regardless of it actually makes a difference or not tongue.gif

will any change with the mobos when steamroller comes out, or will they still be 990fx? should i just get the gen 3 sabertooth?

The new boards will most probably still be 990FX but as they release Steamroller, there is a chance that motherboard manufacturers will release new revisions of the boards with more options/better connectivity... but that's just a guess.

My honest advice would be to wait for the release of Steamroller and take it from there. No need to rush into a new platform purchase right away right? I'm sure your current system will last you a couple of more months wink.gif
