What the heck is bitcoin mining?

Thread Starter
I have been hearing people talk about bitcoin mining on this site and having the guy at Microcenter mention it to me finally peeked my interest. What is it? I tried google but it was unhelpful.

You can't discuss that here cause of breaking the TOS.
Google it, it's a form of crypto currency you can generate with your gpus (radeon only).

I don't think OCN really likes people talking about Bitcoin mining on this site. There used to be a huge guide, but it got deleted.

Try googling some more, you'll eventually stumble upon some blogs that have basic summaries.

Bitcoins are a virtual currency (that recently spiked in value) and you can "mine" them (let your computer do complex math equations 24/7) to try and acquire some.

It might be because Bitcoins are generally used to buy drugs and stuff through the silkroad/.onion sites or whatever.

Also might be because interest in Bitcoin mining reduces interest in more selfless things such as SETI@home and folding@home.

^ I would hope it's the former... because if the reason was the latter that's not something I could respect. Drugs, etc, I can totally understand. However, that's the benefit of bitcoin, whilst also being a drawback... They refuse to regulate it so it's free and swings both ways.

But yeah the first part makes sense. I get it now biggrin.gif

Donate@home, a BOINC project, uses mining to fund researches.

Discussion about bitcoin is generally not allowed due to the unrecognized nature of the currency and because it's against OCN's ToS to directly profit from your activities here which bitcoin mining is seen as.

Please do not make more threads about the subject.
