Help with overclocking my RAM

Thread Starter
I wanted to ask everyone's opinion and ideas here. First the pertinent details of my rig:

Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5
AMD FX-8120 currently @ 4.2 GHz, cooled by a Corsair H80
32 GB G.SKILL Ripjaws Z DDR3-1866 RAM
LEPA 900W Gold Series power supply
1GB Sapphire Radeon 5870 Vapor-X OC Eyefinity 3 Edition

The 32GB of 1866 memory was an upgrade from a 16GB set of Ripjaws X DDR3-1600. With the 32 GB set I've hit a peak stable overclock at 4.2 GHz, but I never really tried overclocking the CPU beyond 10-15% with the 1600, let alone tried overclocking the 1600. I still have the 16 GB set since the family member I offered it to has decided to stick with their laptop as opposed to building a new tower. I know that with Gigabyte's latest BIOS update it's pretty easy to manually set the memory at 1866, but I was wondering if anyone knows how to achieve a higher speed than that or if it would require me to get a different motherboard. Also, I know the latency is faster with the 1600 set at 9-9-9-24 compared to the 10-11-10-30 for the 1866, but I'm curious as to whether I could retain the faster latency while overclocking it to 1866... anyone able to help me out with us?

If you have all the RAM slots populated, the IMC will be stressed hard.
And if you plan on a 9-9-9-24 at 1866, try with only 16 GB (2 slots populated) first,to see how it goes.
Run Memtest and if no errors occur, try with more modules. (Though I believe it's a longshot at such tight timings)
Sidenote. Stressed IMC means hotter chip-> less CPU OC headroom.
Personally,I would go for something like that.
9-10-9-28-1T
DRAM Voltage.1.5v
CPU/NB vid. +0.1v

I couldn't get the memory timings quite that low at 1866 (the best I could manage was 9-10-9-28), but I pulled two sticks and lowered it to 1600 and have been able to achieve 9-9-9-24, had to re-apply thermal paste (it was quite tacky and dry), and right now it's nice and stable at just over 4000MHz with nice results... system is running very cool (average CPU temp has been around 27-28C at normal loads, 40-41C at peak, and about 18-19C idle/light loads)... I may just stick with the 16GBs (2 x 8GB) for now and see what I can do to further tweak the CPUs OC performance...

Thanks for the tips... between that and figuring out my thermal paste was pretty much done for I've seen a huge improvement tonight in my system.
