Quick PSU question.

Well according to guru 3d, the GTX 680 full load power consumption is around 307w (considering 85% efficiency - roughly 260W) and the 7970 full load power consumption is a little higher at 355W (considering 85% efficiency - roughly 300W).

CPU used - FX-4130, FX-6100 and 8320.

NOTE: Nothing will be overclocked, therefore a stock cooler will likely be used. Case is the Zalman Z5 plus. Certainly no stress testing the GPU with applications like Furmark.

My question is will the Antec VP450P be able to handle the load of the both the GTX 680 and ATI 7970 in obviously different systems , ie playing an intensive game like Crysis 3, metro etc.

I'm not planning on running an Nvidia and ATI card together, they will be in separate systems.

FX4130 + 680, FX4130 + 7970
FX6100 + 680, FX6100 + 7970
FX8320 + 680, FX8320 + 7970.

You're doing the 85% backwards. The PSU is only 85% efficient.
So the power coming out is only 85% of the power going in. At 450 watts coming out, it will be sucking something like 530 watts out of the mains.

From here

Output +3.3V@24A, +5V@15A, +12V1@18A, +12V2@18A, -12V@0.3A, +5VSB@2.5A

12v @ 18 amps is 216 watts for each 12v rail. That's 432 watts from the two 12 volt rails. That only leaves 18 watts left for everything else (450 - 423 = 18).

So no, that PSU won't even come close to running both cards at the same time.

You got the math all wrong, the 12v rail(s) can give up to 360 watts. It is not a single rail psu.

Interesting..... Is that not what I was referring to..... 307W measured at the wall equates to 260W after 85% efficiency, which is what the computer is pulling from the PSU. redface.gif

You dont need more then 750 watts for a system with two video cards

I'm not going to be running 2 cards. Its going to be single card systems. That is why I'm looking at a 450W power supply, more specifically the Antec VP450P.

I'm not sure I get the question... do you plan on using two VP450P to power those cards, or swap the one you own between the setups or (it sounds mental, I know) power both of them from a single unit? smile.gif


Partial answer: It will power the 680 just fine (with any of the CPUs listed there), it will struggle with the 7970 and not in a heroic fashion.. wink.gif
The 680s are ~200-220W at most, in games (with nice overclcks also), 7970s are mirroring 580s in terms of power draw (especially once you start to push the clocks)..... the VP450P isn't made to deal with such loads. wink.gif


edit:
Since you cleared that out, I would suggest a higher end unit (G series from Seasonic maybe).

Will not be overvolting or overclocking at all on all the systems. I'm on a budget and i'm not looking to spend no more than £35. I can order the Antec for around £27 per unit.
