Finally going to upgrade my old i7 920 ---> sandy bridge-e - Page 2

Windows did not boot - you have checked the pins on S1366? Have you updated your bios (which might have corrupted the system)? Have you checked your RAM with Windows memory diagnostics? I mean have you done all that before upgrading?

I ran memtest like a month ago (when i started having weird issues) and passed without a hitch (passed Intel burn test too). Haven't upgraded bios in a year or so, at least 6 months. Also reset bios to non-overclocked (default) state. No change. I haven't checked the pins, but haven't pulled the CPU in a very long time. The system did have a few times where it rebooted and didn't recognize the SSD as boot able, and when it did finally find the SSD, (after several reboots and a way too long time to boot) worked until now when it goes into win8 recovery and can't recover asking for a recovery CD which I don't have since I installed from the HD.

It could be my SSD, but I don't want to wait foot a replacement to get here and possibly be something else, especially with the extended BIOS boot time I'm experiencing.

Just looking back at my order, I F*ked up. I ordered an xl-atx board and my 800d only supports e-atx and not the XL form factor. I thought I had my search results narrowed to just atx and e-atx boards when i was searching, but must have pressed back at some point and lost that refinement on the search. So.... I called and they have already filled and have the box ready for shipping. I can either refuse the box on delivery and get a refund, (customer service said) or just call and get an RMA to return the MSI board once it's here. I really hate not having a computer, so I'm going to go ahead order another MOBO and just eat the shipping cost to return the MSI.

so the mobo has changed to a Rampage IV formula, refurbished. I have had good experiences with the refurb products from newegg, hopefully this continues the lucky streak.....

I received all the parts today. The big bang 2 looks just awesome and the rampage 4 formula looks weak in comparison. The rampage showed up in a white box labeled " manufacturer reconditioned" and was open. That's a double whammy...... Not just open box, but reconditioned before was received by another customer and then returned............ makes me worry. I don't have time to build the system now (this next day or two), only have thirty days to test for functionality and it's a bunch of work with all the watercooling and all. I'm regretting getting the open box deal frown.gif but maybe it'll be alright.

In case anyone is wondering, I built the system and it's reining great for the first day. no problems at all. I'll post pics when the wife isn't sleeping in the room with the computer. Another open box win. I was worried about the mothered being open box and refurbished, but it's going great! OC to 4.3 for a start, ran is running at 2400 and stable with 10 passes on IBT, just ran one on max since 14gb test took forever.

Nice, aside from benchmarks, do you notice a real world difference? What I mean is anyone can look at numbers and tell if one is faster than the other, but your other I7 was still somewhat a good cpu, compared to that are you able to tell a noticeable difference in what you are doing?

The windows experience is a little smoother. But overall there isn't much of a difference from my perspective. Like you said, I know in my head things are faster, more memory, ect. But not many tasks would max out the previous system anyway. I would have waited for haswell, but didn't want to go a month without a computer or longer.
