IVY or Haswell which way should i swing?

Well im getting a big impatient with an upgrade. Obviously Haswell is just round the corner and i really want a new build as it's all going under water. Is the performance upgrade really worth the wait?? I want to use a sabertooth motherboard as they will make a custom water looped rig look mental clean.

i did consider going down the LGA2011 road for some serious 6 core processing power. But still cant bring myself to pull the trigger on IVY or wait for Haswell. There's a lot of mixed reviews about Haswell and i will have to wait a bit longer for asus to release their high end MB's to house the new chips.
I am saving for a house this year and will be building next year so this build will have to be rock solid for quite a few years as i wont have any cash left after i pay the mortgage smile.gif

Wat r ur guys thoughts on IVY vs Haswell?? The only big thing with haswell is it's integrated graphics which doesnt mean much for me but wasted die space with dedicated graphics. I was thinking of an i7-3770k and a sabertooth Z77 and putting it all under water. I want the cleanest finish on this new rig and the sabertooth really brings it all together.

Hopefully the price drops alot with IVY when Haswell comes out cause the prices have hardly budged in the past 6 months

Doubt you'll see prices on ivy drop too much, likely what we saw with sandy-->ivy. If you're putting it under water, I'd wait for haswell. Everything we keep hearing is that it'll be a great OC'r, so might as well not waste the headroom WC will give you!

hmmmm yea i have heard that they do clock well. I guess by the time asus release their LGA1150 sabertooth the initial price hit of new hardware mite subside a little.....im hoping smile.gif

no point in upgrading now to a dead socket. if anything, i would wait just for that reason. who knows, intel may decide to use the same socket for a while rolleyes.gif

Haha this is intel we're talking about!!! But this is exactly why i am holding back a bit cause when i built my sig rig sandy bridge came out 3 months later. So that hurt alot esp, when sandy O/C's so much better than the 950 with **** tonne less heat! But like i said it's all going to be under a custom loop so heat shouldnt be a problem.
Thats the biggest reason for my upgrade, cause here in australia during summer my gaming rigs really cook so something with less heat would be awesome! The 950 @ 4.15ghz seems to be holding up quite well with the 2 GTX670's but could be swapping out soon as they kinda struggle every now and then with 3 x asus VE247H monitors. Surround gaming isnt an absolute must cause 3 screens come in handy for just browsing/working but it would be nice to run any game at max settings on 3 screens. So more VRAM is a must!

I don't recommend buying the first batch of Haswell. If you can wait buy the second batch, if you cant buy IVY. Nothing revolutionary about Haswell.

I'm going with Haswell. Also, prices on Z77 boards and LGA1155s are going up here, I don't know if that's affecting Australia, but I think Intel's constraining orders on Ivy to make way for Haswell.

Well the prices havent gone up, motherboards are going down a bit but the IVY chips havent really moved at all. $343AUD for an i7-3770k through my supplier and i dont see it moving much. But by comparison when i brought my i7-950 i paid $400AUD for it, and $395 for the second one when i built another gaming rig for my mates to use when they came over smile.gif
I think i will wait for Haswell, and when it gets released ill see the good and bad that goes with it.
In the meantime i mite try and clock the 950 to the 4.4ghz mark now it's cumn into winter and see how it goes.

I would only get Ivy Bridge 3770k if you plan to delid it.Without delidding it runs hot let me tell you.Even my watercooling set up struggles to keep it cool.Hopefully Haswell will be like Sandy Bridge and have a soldered die unlike Ivy Bridge which has some crappy thermal paste on it.But yeah Haswell is just a few weeks away now.Might aswell see what that brings to overcloking especially as you will be using a custom water loop redface.gif
