MSI R7970 TF 3GD5/OC BE Reviews? - Page 16

Havnt sent mine back in yet, but i will in the next few days. At this point im not sure if i want to even buy another 7970. I was hoping that ASUS direct CU II top would be a good one since i love their cooling solutions. Everyone has seemed to not like that card as much though.

I think my options right now.....after i return the card are either

2x quality 7950 , not sure which yet

another 7970

or wait for gtx 770/780 , which after hearing their leaked specs...not too impressed with the 770.

PS, don't choose a ghz/boost card if you know what's good for you. sneaky.gif

Typical XFX. My XFX 6950 had its dual BIOS switch removed as well, in addition to the "warranty void of removed" stickers on the heatsink stickers... XFX is at the bottom of my list for AMD cards.

Honestly, looking back, I'm kinda wishing I went with 2x 7950s. Around 5% slower, for $200 less than a pair of 7970s. And dual 7950s are enough to max out most of the most demanding games with lots of AA and stay WAY above 60fps at all times. At least at 1920x1080. That extra 5% IMO isn't needed and definitely isn't worth $200 more...

The 770 is pretty underwhelming and better have a pretty low launch price if Nvidia has any hopes of it being a success. The 780 has a GK110 core but they'll likely charge a fortune because of the 5GB vram, which is WAYYY overkill for 1920x1080 gaming. 3GB is future-proof, 5GB is just silly.

I just filled out an RMA form from newegg and im curious..........how did u get them to return you the full amount you paid for the card.

Its saying because the game bundle that came with the card was 120$, its not refundable BUT I still have to send it back in with the card in order to get a refund.

So their return quote right now for me looks like this.

MSI R7970 TF 3GD5/OC BE Radeon HD 7970 3GB Twin Frozr OC $409.99RMA Type: Refund
DISCOUNT FOR AUTOADD #81533Qty:1 -$119.99RMA Type: Refund
RMA Total: $290.00
Tax Amount: $21.75

Total Refund: $311.75

I paid 444 and some change total for the card.. Why are they deducting 120 bucks from it? I have not used the game codes and still have them. They dont give any type of option to deselect the game bundle when you select RMA.

I had to get on chat and get them to adjust the RMA> As long as the coupon card is unscratched they will take it back. Only way not to pay 15% restocking fee is if the card is defective. It was pretty easy on chat

I was thinking the same thing! These are supposed to be the highest binned ref cards.

I can't say that on the record but I will say I've had great success with the Diamonds. thumb.gif

As long as you send back the un-scratched game voucher card with your GPU, they will give you a full refund of $410 (assuming no restock fee). I simply did it over the phone with my HIS IceQ because I had to explain to them that the box was unopened to get them to waive the restock fee.

Wait seriously?? Diamond pays AMD for higher-binned chips?? I had this sneaking suspicion for a while that different brands paid AMD different amounts for their chips based on how they were binned - so I was probably correct in making my accusation of MSI paying AMD less for lower-binned chips in my recent Newegg review of the TF3... Wonder how they'll feel when they read that.

I can vouch for this. All three of my failed DDs had no bios switch. They're supposed to be sending me a reference now so maybe i can get lucky and get a gold one like you thumb.gif i'm skeptical though.

How did you come up with that? Stop imagining things lol.

The basic reference card has to fit within a specified TDP limit. Therefor the gpu is leakage level has to fit within that TDP window. This is different from boost cards because boost cards don't have a rhyme or reason for the binning because the voltage is locked to 1.25v. Since the voltage is predetermined they can use any leakage level chip.
