Wow SLK you got a winner of a chip there. 1200 at 66c? thats nuts. Mine at 1150 was peaking near 77c at the hottest time of the day.

Hows the coil whine on your card?

The basic reference card has to fit within a specified TDP limit. Therefor the gpu is leakage level has to fit within that TDP window. This is different from boost cards because boost cards don't have a rhyme or reason for the binning because the voltage is locked to 1.25v. Since the voltage is predetermined they can use any leakage level chip.

SLK said he heard Diamond 7970s were supposed to be the highest binned reference cards, to which you replied "I can't say that on record" - Idk, the way you said it just sounded like you knew something about Diamond cards that most people didn't. Just read it wrong.

Anyway, it does make sense that with a less-effective cooler, they need to have less leakage.

Coil whine is really annoying but honestly I'd put up with the coil whine if I could run 1200Mhz on air cooling...

Crazy how you had the lowest ASIC TF3 in this thread and you ended up with the best OC'er. Not saying the two are completely unrelated but it does show that it's not the end-all-be-all factor. Anyways, congratz on a good score, here's to hoping my replacement is better than my original!

Its been the record that the Diamond 7970s are the highest binned, I don't have proof of that but these cards have been out for quite a while to make that determination. How about I buy one and find out perhaps?
