MSI R7970 TF 3GD5/OC BE Reviews? - Page 28

couldn't resist, opened it and installed it. Only thing I know is ASIC is 60.9% (first card was 69.5%) and stock voltage is 1.256v (first card was 1.219v). So not a good start. Haven't done any sort of testing yet, waiting for Valley to finish downloading. I know SLK's card had a sub-60 ASIC with the same stock voltage and ended up reaching 1200mhz but I'm still skeptical that this will be the exact same story as the other 7970s I've had.

As said the Diamond is back in stock with the 4 games now. I hope we see a price drop after the 780 release.

Hollywood which one is this now? I skimmed through the thread were i left off but your on what your third or fourth 7970?

I can't remember if i posted my ASIC rating for my diamond but IIRC it's 81.9% just for reference.

I don't see a justification for why a 7970 would drop in price with the 780, especially when the 780 is more expensive by greater than 50%. If Titan is ahead of a 7970 by 30%, and a 780 is under a Titan by 15%, the jump for a marginal gain in performance doesn't equal the cost. Though it is also true that it made no sense for Titan as well. Anyways, the cards are in wholly different price brackets.

Guess i'm looking at single GPU flagship series vs flagship series excluding Titan and the Dual GPU cards. Wishful thinking i suppose rolleyes.gif

The 780 is the still overpriced junior Titan. In its case we're looking at 20% tops performance gain if that, but for a minimum 50% premium. It would be illogical for AMD to lower prices.

Testing done. Card sucks. Under stock settings (1050Mhz @ 1.256v) temps reach 73C in Valley in an extremely well-cooled case. Tried 1200Mhz @ 1.3v and +20% power (fans pegged at 90%, max temp 65C core / 67C VRM) and Valley crashed after 1 loop. Coil whine isn't quite as bad as the first card but still in a range I would consider unacceptable. Haven't tried any less than 1200, don't really want to.

I'm honestly kinda speechless, and this is almost kind of funny. 5 different cards. None hit 1200Mhz. Not a single one. All terrible ASIC scores. All with loud coil whine. I think I'm just done with Tahiti cards. I'm cursed. Maybe the curse will be lifted when the next generation rolls around. If I can get enough for it on ebay, I'll consider trying a pure reference non-boost card, but that's it, nothing else.

Obviously there are people in this thread who got well past the 1200 mark on air with these TF3s. But personally I cannot recommend them at all.

I'm pretty sure I've told ya before to get a real reference card. It's like my mantra or something. Oh Ranger just replaced his bent up Matrix lol.

yes you've told me that but only after I already bought this TF3 and that HIS IceQ X2. When I ordered those 2 cards I knew nothing about reference cards. The TF3 is a real reference PCB but I guess the higher-TDP cooler and boost binning completely negate anything a ref PCB can provide.

Where did he find a ref Sapphire 7970? Or is it used?

The TF3 is not a real reference card though. It is uses an alternate pcb. It should be obvious by its brown color, no green AMD sticker on the back, and it is not stamped 109-C38637-00.

I think he bought the last ref card in his country, new old stock or something.
