Getting traffic to my blog

Thread Starter
Hey all,

At this point I have 2 wordpress websites I use as blogs, bought a domain and webspace and invested in a theme.

Now website 1 I've had for some time now but not really active anymore (will change again), I post the latest house music on there (links to youtube with link to beatport or itunes).

Website 2 is new and is written in Dutch, I'll be using this site to post my recipes (desserts).

Now what I need some advice on:

*I've got the SEO plugin Yoast installed on website 2 and All-in-one SEO pack on website 1. Haven't really dug into it really but on website 2 I set the latest 2 posts with the plugin.

When I post something I put this on my twitter account, facebook page for the website and my own facebook page. For the foodblog I will soon post on Pinterest too.

Question: I need more traffic and I want to earn something from the adsense advertisements. Since I implemented the ads on website 1 I have earned a total of 19€ since 2009 (ridiculous). It would be nice if could get +/- 100€ per month from the website.

Any tips on what I could do?

The secret is issuing some good quality and interesting content in your sites. You don't want people to enter and go out straight away, you want them to stay a few minutes, or better hours. So keep writing/posting things.
Some other tips:
- Publicize your posts on social networks (make a page in Fb, that helps a lot)
- Submit your websites to Google here
- Make good use of keywords

Good luck!

Content is everything. SEO plugins are no more than a gimmick if you are hoping that they will magically improve your website's traffic without any work on your behalf. If you write good, original content that people are interested in then it will bring in more traffic with or without plugins. Also, while it's good to keep keywords at the back of your mind while writing, it should never be the focus of the content. If you write your content around keywords it will sound like you wrote it around keywords.

Inbound links from other reputable websites will also go a long way to improving your rank in search results and thus traffic. Backlink spamming is not the solution to this though, and generally gives short term gains at best (sometimes huge short term gains, but short term nonetheless).

100 euro per month is a fair bit. You're going to need to decent amount of traffic to achieve that.

Well getting traffic is the tricky part however here's a list of tips.

  • Don't start promoting your site until you have a reasonable amount of content already on the site and make sure to update it continually
  • Share the page on social networks with as many friends as you can, hopefully some of them will be kind enough to reshare it for you
  • Update your social media pages regularly, nobody wants to be part of a page with no activity
  • Use advertising to gain traffic to your site, both online and traditional if appropriate
  • Share your site on social bookmarking sites and refer to it in relevant communities
  • Consider paying other people to help you keep the site active when it is first starting so it doesn't look dead to new visitors

It is all about your content and your consistency. It also helps to have a facebook page that you tie in as well and it REALLY helps to try and network with other similar blogs or websites. smile.gif
