CPU not fully covered by heatsink

Thread Starter
Hello. I am currently building a cheap PC with the following:
  1. GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 - Socket AM3+ - Chipset AMD 990FX - ATX
  2. AMD Sempron 145 2.8GHz Socket AM3 45W 1MB L2 Cache OEM Processor
  3. CPU-Cooler Spire CoolReef Pro SP805S3 for AMD AM2/AM3 and K8

The issue I am facing regards the coverage of the heat sink on the CPU. Although the fan covers the entire CPU there is minimal contact and coverage and the CPU is clearly visible. The CPU cooler came with pre applied thermal paste so the CPU has had nothing more applied to it. I am worried that the CPU will burn out as there is only a tiny amount of thermal compound and so little coverage. As far as i am aware the CPU and cooler are fully compatible but looking at it... I do have concerns. What do you guys think?

Cheers

PS. i can take photos if required.

yup photos required .. this sounds strange
From looking at that HSF, from the link you provided, it looks like that heatsink is pretty shotty looking to begin with.

For a few extra bucks, you may wanna look into the Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO series of heatsinks(120mm fans):
http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php?product_id=3053

or the Hyper TX3 series (92 mm fans):
http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php?product_id=2922

I personally use both of these heatsinks (amd phenom II x6 1045t and phenom II x4 B65) and they perform very well.

Of course there are other choices out there, depends on a number of things:

1) Budget
2) Availability in your area
3) Size of your case

Looking forward to seeing the pics you provide. I'm sure we will be able to assist further after that. Good luck!

This is pretty normal for some heatsinks. As long as its 90% covered then you should be good for everyday use. I believe even the Hyper 212's dont fully cover the chip.

EDIT: After looking at the heatsink, I wouldnt do any OCing with that.

Photos will be up soon. I would say that it is most certainly NOT 90% covered... more like 40%. I am using the CPU for a Litecoin Miner so it will be pretty much idle as all the GPU's will be doing the work so it will never really be used for anything other than running program in terminal. I just want to make sure before i turn it all on!!!

What happened with the stock cooler? It looks like it has to be better than the one you bought, did it come with a stock cooler?

Also, just reviewing your chip .. says it's a K10 chip .. that cpu cooler you have is for K8 .. may be the issue.

I suggest something like
Xigmatek Loki £11.99
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xigmatek-CAC-S9HH3-U06-SD963-Cooling-System/dp/B00432M2S4/ref=sr_1_18?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1366723916&sr=1-18&keywords=am2%2Fam3+cooler

It's only £2.00 more than
Arctic Cooler Alpine 64 Pro £10.00 .. which is also much better than what you posted link to.
http://www.ebuyer.com/340973-arctic-cooling-alpine-64-pro-socket-939-am2-am2-am3-processor-cooler-ucaco-a64d2-gba01

Loki is better but Alpine 64 Pro will do. Both have PWM fans so easy to control with CPU_FAN PWM control on motherboard using EasyTune 6 Smart and you can set minimum idle and maximum load rpm.

If that is the case just use the stock cooler if you have it.
