Computer freezes for 2-3 seconds everyonce in a while..

I'll give you a run down of whats happened with this laptop.. My HD recently died and I had to put a new one in. It did these random hiccups before the hard drive died, but I believe it was because I used my laptop to listen to music in my car (lack of smart phone lol) sometimes i would hit a small bump and it would do the same thing as its doing and distort the music. I also put in an extra 4 GB stick of RAM before the hard drive failure to have 8GBs and they are different brands and speed. I am just guessing the hiccups deal with maybe the RAM being different. I know that RAM is only as fast as its slowest stick, so im wondering if you guys think the RAM is the culprit. These hiccups don't happen 247, but they are annoying when im listening to music. Any ideas?

First off how do you know that drive was not bad and its not a controller on your motherboard? You say you have a new hard drive with same issues. Could be motherboard. I would look into that. Second and actually more important why on earth did you think using different brand ram and speeds would be a good idea. NOw I know its possible, but so is jumping off the empire state building, and saying you're using different ram brands and speeds is like nails on a chalkboard here at OCN. That would be my first pit stop to look at. Make sure you're using the same brand and timings of memory, and if its laptop make sure you have compatible ram, I have seen some brands just not work well with different laptops, ex HP, DEll etc... Also you mention nothing about testing either the old or new harddrive, it also is entirely not out of the question that you did receive a bad new hard drive, NOt likely but possible.

Well, I wasn't really paying attention to the the brand at the time. A friend gave me the hard drive (its not new) and the RAM stick (also isn't new) lol. The old hard drive was dead completely. It wouldn't let me even boot the laptop. Also, a lot of the people that I talk to tell me most of the time its fine to mix ram, but it isn't preferred.

In terms of laptop RAM, they are pretty standardized across the board. Whatever speed you get it they have the same timings at that speed. The faster module should downclock to the slower one and run the same timings.

What brand/model laptop do you have? I would suggest NOT driving or moving the laptop a lot while it is on unless you get an SSD. HDD are not meant to be moved around while on. Also, many laptops have software/sensors that detect movement and will instantly pause the HDD so that it won't be spinning while it is detecting motion. This is to prevent bad sectors from happening.

laptops sometimes come with a built in HD diagnostic, see if there is one and try running it since now you mention the "new" hard drive actually isnt new.

I didn't know about the HD pausing sensor. That must have been the reason for the pausing while listening to music. I'm guessing now the reason for the other is ram or something. The hiccups havnt happened for the past few hours. So honestly, it's not too annoying, but ill probably get a stick of ram that is exact and not a different brand just to be safe. The laptop is a HP DM4.

If you want to listen the music from your laptop in your car, you should at least build some sort of a shock absorber.

I never said he could mix ram I said its not preferred, and not a good idea, ideally you want same brand and same speeds, mixing ram can cause conflictions, its been known to cause all sorts fo problems.

Well, I put a different stick of RAM in there and it hasn't done the hiccups for almost a day and a half. So i'm guessing it was the RAM.
