Temperature utilities

Thread Starter
Hi all,
So I built two very similar computers (one for a friend). They both have an e6300, and same everything besides the videocard. Additionally one has stock cooling and one has a zalman9700. I've had a few issues comparing temperatures under load:

Tat doesn't seem to work at all (it gives me an error). Does it work with dual cores?
uGuru shows the CPU with the zalman 9700 about 6 degrees c lower (45 vs 51) under load
CoreTemp shows the two temperatures as identical (it fluctuates a bit but they are pretty much the same) around 55c under load. I would have expected the CPU with the Zalman 9700 to have a lower temperature.

Does everyone else trust coretemp (.94 beta)? Is there something else I can try?

Thanks,
Jon

prime95 won't give you temp readings. TAT works on dual core CPU's, I'm not sure why your getting an error. You can try Speedfan, everest or motherboard monitor. Do you have the latest version of TAT?

I use CoreTemp and TAT at the same time, and they give me basically identical results, so I trust both.

Have you made sure the surfaces are clean and straight? Have you made sure to apply the optimal amount of thermal grease in the right area?

Just a clarification: TAT only works on Intel Core 2 Duo processors.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I was trying to use TaT ver 1.05 and it fails on both computers.
I wouldn't be surprised if I messed up putting the zalman 9700 on, it was a real pain to put on (one of the screws was nearly impossible to get to) and I think I put too much thermal compound on (I was following the pictures). I did not apply it in a strip like I later saw. If you have a link to a good how-to that would be helpful.
How should I go about removing and re-applying if I go that route? I might also post some pics so you can see my handiwork.
Lastly, I still found it strange that uGuru consistently gives me a lower reading on the PC I think should have a lower temperature (the one with the Zalman 9700) while coretemp gives the same reading for both. I'll try the other utilities you mentioned when I get home and post results. Thanks again,
Jon

I think core temp is probably giving me accurate readings (everest agrees)...as I overclocked these two processors further the zalman 9700 was a few dregrees lower (at around 390mhz fsb). I still think my temperature is probably high because I didn't put the zalman9700 on right. Specifically I think I used too much of the thermal compund.

Should I just put it on in a strip down the middle like I read somewhere online?
What load core temps are others getting with air cooling of an e6300 at around 2.8ghz?
Mine is about 59c at its highest (several hours into orthos and I waited for the highest temp reading over a 10-15 minute period).

Thanks,
Jon
