New computer help

Thread Starter
I want to upgrade my computer, but I'm currently out of touch with today's current hardware. I would really appreciate a nudge in the right direction. I'll mainly be using this computer for general use and gaming, and i'm working with a budget of $1000. Thank you in advance for all the help smile.gif

Current Specs: GARBAGE
-Mobo, ASRock M3A770DE
-CPU, Athlon II X4
-GPU, GTX 650 sc
-PSU, TX650
-Memory, 8gb 1600 gskill
-HDD, Seagate 1tb

New specs:

CPU : i5-3570K or FX-8320

M/B: Gigabyte Z77 UD3H or Asus Sabertooth 990X R2.0

PSU: The one you have is fine but if you need to get a new one, the Capstone 450M (for single GPU setup) or Capstone 650M (for Dual high-end cards) are high-quality units for a decent price.

SSD: Samsung 830 or 840pro (128GB or 256GB depending on budget)

HDD: The one you already own.

Memory: 8GB @ 1600MHz is more than enough. But it doesn't hurt to add another 8GB of the same above memory you already own.

GPU (Here it gets a bit tricky): If you're gaming with a single monitor @ 1080p and like to max IQ settings in new games, you'll need Nvidia670/AMD7950 at least. (some games need a couple of cards to maintain good FPS).

990fx chipset is for sli/crossfire, amirite? If you are aiming for a single card setup going with amd, look at 970 chipsets in addition to the 990fx.

Thanks for the help, exxon. I've been looking between three different boards and can't decide on which one to go with...
I'd like to be able to do some overclocking with the 3770k

-GA-Z77X-UD5H
-Z77A-GD65
-Z77 MPOWER

I always liked MSI (anything above the GD43) boards since they tend to be underdogs compared to ASUS & Gigabyte, so my choice would be the Mpower.
But have you seen this new GD65 ?
Also the Gigabyte UP4 @ 154$ is a good choice.

But really, any one of the boards you picked is a solid board.

I've heard a lot of really good about the UD5H boards, especially with overclocking, even from reputable people in the field. I don't think you could go wrong with that one. Like they said, a 3570k and ATLEAST a 670/7950 would be recommended. More is always better but the price hikes are pretty steep above those.
I kind of went middle ground, somewhere in the balanced performance-to-cost areas, for my signature build.
