If your rig does what you want it to do right now, I'd wait and save up enough for a complete new rig. $700 - $800 should buy you a good new rig (either Core 2 Duo or AMD)

There have been some benchmarks comparing the AMD Quad-Core to the Intel QX6600 (Intel's Quad-Core) and the AMD is pawned yet again. They consume more power, cost more, have less performance in games and perform worse in most other applications. The K8L may destroy the current AM2 systems and compete with the current Core 2 Duo setups, but they are far from destroying anything that Intel is producing now, sad to say.

Yes the advantage of the AMD quad core is that they have all 4 cores on a single die, unlike Intel where they put two e6700 Dies onto one base which AMD called "hacking".

The disadvantage to the Intel is that because its on two seperate dies, yes it DOES have 8MB of Cache (4MB per die). Now the problem is this, the CPU is unable to transfer information from Die1's Cache to Die2's Cache for work that its processing. The other problem is that the two dies are only able to communicate VIA FSB and that then is taking a longer route through a busy system of information instead of doing everything on a CPU then sending out.

This being said theory has the AMD looking better at this point in time. But Intel has been showin AMD up recently so we'll see if AMD redeems themselves with their quad core!

-----------

And Yes I'd wait it out if your computer is working fine. Save up and get a New Rig with the current Socket that is in use. The F socket is out now from AMD (think it was F wasn't it?) We'll see soon enough. But wait it out save up so you get build a new all up to date rig when the time comes you need the upgrade!

I'm pretty sure you are confusing AMD quad core which isn't out yet to AMD QuadFX that is coming out very soon.

Anyway, I agree with Chozart, if it does what you want it to now, just wait until you can save up some money to buy a full machine then new tech will be out and you can choose then.

K8L if you wanna go AMD. Otherwise, I'd tell you to go C2D since INtel has the higher performance numbers at the moment.
