Custom Fan Controller Questions

Hey all, long time reader first time poster smile.gif

I was looking into fan controllers for a 560 rad but I don't like the idea of manually changing the fan setting depending on load and the aquacomputer stuff is overly pricy. So instead I was thinking of connecting 4 fans to a single motherboard fan header. The fans I'm thinking of using are the Noiseblocker NB-BlackSilentPRO PK-2 140mm which are meant to have a max current draw of 0.09A so that should be fine right?

However I want to go bigger and better, dual 560 in push pull; 16 fan off one motherboard connector. Now this should only be 1.44 amps and I remember reading some where that 2 amps would burn the motherboard header so in theory should this be ok?

I am leaning more so to the side of caution which is why I'm posting these questions here rather that just giving it a whirl, also I thought one way to reduce the current load on the header would be to feed the active signal to unity gain buffer, maybe 4 in parallel and then run 4 fans off each one. What do you guy think?

iirc its not just a case of the rated load, some fans draw much more at first start up.

You can get a PWM splitter cable that takes power from a molex and rpm from PWM header but fans need to be PWM and i heard of people doing this sometimes saying it didnt work for them, im sure somebody else here can help better with that though biggrin.gif

Ok thanks, I might measure the fan current draw on startup and then design the op amp circuitry around that.
