[techreport] PS4 architect discusses console's custom AMD processor

Gamasutra recently discussed the PS4's underlying hardware with lead architect Mark Cerny, providing new insight on the guts of the console.

Derp. If even the CPU L2 cache is coherent with the GPU, why does it need a powerful CPU? As long as it can perform physics, audio, background transactions by the OS, and IO stuff... The GPU is the one that's handling the real load.

Yea but if the CPU is too weak it could bottleneck the system. I made that mistake when I bought a Alienware m11x r1, a decent 335m GPU but the 1.6ghz C2D processor was a major bottleneck. Thankfully they fixed that with the r2 and r3.

Dont compare pc with consoles. The APIs are totally different. You dont need a fast cpu for the consoles.

You do for hardbody physics and multiplayer with a ton of players. It's the reason that the 360 and ps3 couldn't have 64 man BF3, the processors were holding them back.

Any developer that attempts to port a game that only supports up to quad, dual cores, or god-forbid, single core, and thinks it will run on a low clocked but many cores CPU, deserves a slideshow product.

Then there's also the GPU-computing made easier by HSA and allowed by the GPU's high computing performance that sits between a 7850 and a 7870.

I don't know many PC games that use GPU-computing extensively other than the Batman Arkham, and even then it's restricted to PhysX (aka, Nividia GPU or go away).

It doesn't matter at all. You are programming for a specific platform with fully coherent memories down to CPU caches (that's why I mentioned the L2), to the point that a CPU is not a standalone CPU, and a GPU is not a standalone GPU. You can make use of them for what you need them, no need to program in a traditional PC point of view.

You can have the GPU work realtime with the CPU physics calculation without even needing to move them from one place to another, for example.
