flex raid vs raid 5/6

first time doing raid and buiding a server pc

i havent got any parts yet

current problem im about to run out of space and need more fast and dont have alot of money to spend thats why im looking at getting a 1tb hdd for now that i can use as the boot drive for the server.
when i get the money for 4 4tb seagate drives ill raid them but i want to be able to expand this without lossing all my data every time i expand.

what i plan to use the server for is streaming to a ps3, a htpc, my i5 system.
storing all games, software for my i5 system on it. backup my ssd nightly

flexraid seems to be easy to use and expandable but speed of a single drive and if a drive fails the data on that drive is lost but the rest stays

raid 5 and 6 is faster but takes time to be expanded and that same drives need to be used and only one drive can fali for raid 5 and two for raid 6

is their any hardware i should get and which raid should i setup and if i missed anything tell me plse:thumb:

@OP

For your uses , FlexRAID or something similar will be sufficient. Since you're only going to be streaming across a GigE network (I assume) you'll easily saturate that with a single drive anyway.

I had the same issue, i decided that i would go Ubuntu server and install mdadm i now have 7 x 3TB WD RED drives in a RAID6 array with a 60GB SSD drive for the OS, i bought the ASROCK Extreme 4 for the amount of sata ports it has and if i need to expand in the future i can just buy a JBOD card and add them to the array. mdadm allows you to add more drives it just might take a few hours to add the extra drives. I haven't had any performance issue but i have only had it running for ~1 week. Personally i chose raid 6 because i am paranoid of losing my data.(I already have a backup of it), i don't know about flexi raid but mdadm was really easy to setup and understand. but go with what you think is best.
