upgrade or new?? help/suggestions

Thread Starter
hi all, new to the boards and need help/suggestions.

have 3 and a 1/2 year old pc with asus p4s533-vm, multiplyer and bus locked,
1024 mb pc2700 ddr sram, its ultra ata/133

on board now i have:
celeron northwood 2.00GHz with 128 cache, 400MHz bus,

max supported on board (i think)
2.5GHz (not sure) 1mb cache and 533MHz bus.

i need to upgrade but do i get new proccesor or new mobo?

seen processors for about 80-100 euro but for example i have seen new mobo Asus P5P800-VM with Intel 865G/ICH5/AGPset 3.0 GHz 800FSB 1MB cache for about 150 euro

which looks better? concerned about compatability problems with memory or hard drive.

open to suggestions/advice either way

Weclome to OC.net

I would pass one the P5P800-VM since it's micro ATX (poor OCer). See if you can find a P5P800-SE . I have a P5P800-SE in my second rig. It's a nice LGA775 board that supports DDR1 and AGP cards. I would ditch the old rig, not worth upgrading, since the processor is old, the motherboard is old and newer technology is droping very fast! Pick up a 630 or 805D, and that Asus P5P800-SE. Everything will still be compatible since you chose a board with DDR1, and AGP.

should have added that im only looking for something for the next 12-18 months
on a limited enough budget but that sounds interesting enough to break the bank a little. definately check into that. if i pick a P5P800 SE up second hand what would be a good guide price ?

Humm, well in the states, their less than 70USD new which is like 55 Euros. As for Ireland, I think the price structure is much higher. I would try to convince somebody to buy you the parts, and then ship it to you, since it would be much cheaper. If your spending over 70 Euro for a used board, there's something better out there.

Both the 805D and 6xx series processors are 64bit compatible so their windows visa ready. If you do plan on upgrading to vista after the first of the year.
