Galaxy Y Rooting

Thread Starter
Hello everybody, I have a Galaxy Y cellphone (currently running 2.3.6) and I'd like to root it. I have some experience with my iPod jailbreak, but I still have some questions.

1)What data will I lose? Contacs are on my SIM and music/apps on SD.
2)Which root method should I follow, and which rom should I install then? Also, can I root without chaning rom, my main purpose is to remove all bloatware.
3)Will it boost battery's life?

Thanks in advance

  1. Nothing (however always do backups, you can never be sure).
  2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1822445 Yes you can root without changing ROM. Back in the day CyanogenMod was a very good ROM. I'm not sure how they are doing these days and whether there is one for your phone.
  3. Depends on the ROM.

Well I rooted the phone (with another guide). I also removed some bloat. I have heard/read that most custom ROMs have problems (they cant record video or the gps isn't working, random crashes etc).
Does CyanogenMod have such problems? Also how will I install it? Same way with the root?

Just checked the XDA page. Seems like CyanogenMod is still in alpha stages for your phone so never mind about that. It will depend on the ROM. Some ROMs have been thoroughly tested and pretty much bug free and stable. You will have to look through the description of each one, unless someone on here can recommend a good one for your phone. Installation is different. You will have to put the ROM file onto your SD card, boot into bootloader (I think that might be the wrong name) by doing POWER+VOLUME DOWN (might be different for your phone) once you've turned off your phone. Once again back up everything.

That's the one. Recovery mode. So is it different for different phones? I remember doing POWER+VOLUME DOWN for my Wildfire.
