Edit: Well I dont think K8 knocked Intel out, but it ruffled a bit more than feathers. If Intel had released Core 2 sooner or killed Netburst sooner they might not be so time pressed like they are now. I think they realize that AMD needs about 20% more performance to best Core 2 over K8 with K8L, look at what Core 2 beat Core 1 by, or Pentium-4? The K8 architecture is about 25% faster clock for clock than an AthlonXP, if AMD can get a similar number with K8L then Intel will need to ramp Core 2 45nm clock's up, but also by then AMD 65nm should be maturing a bit while 45nm will be fresh. They are chasing each other's tails, but people like to think AMD is just retreating.

Well said, I didn't know the Conroe was just 25% faster, though it was more like 35%+, so overall K8L most likely will take the crown of performance back, because they know what they need to beat, it wouldn't make sense to put a new architechure out on the market that doesn't beat the current prince of performance, the conroe.

Lets hope

AMD isn't going anywhere soon, as previously said they're growing in other sectors and really the high end enthusiest market is a joke and of little relavence in "the big picture" how much influence do you think we, as overclockers, have in any of Intels or AMD's development?

In a few months K8L will be out, same with AMD's quad-core so we'll see what happens then. As long as it drives the prices down and keeps a tight competition between AMD and Intel, I'm happy.

I concur that about the competition

Core 2 Duo is scalable to 4.0Ghz and beyond once Intel makes the transition to 45nm next year. In 2008, Core 2 will be gone. AMD's new architecture will be competing with Core 3, not Core 2.

Just like Core 2 is competing with K8, K8L will be competing with Core 2. In 2008 Core 2 wont be magically gone. Intel is still making Pentium-4 chips. Transitions dont happen that fast, unless a company wants to starve its customers by having no available upgrades.

we're competing high-end to high-end here, it doesn't make since to say that the K8L - a new architecture, will be competing with Core 2 - an outdated architecture from intel when they have Core 3

Core 3 will still be LGA 775. I don't know what you're talking about. AMD will be on AM6 by then.

The problem is we don't really know what it's capable of doing until we get overclocking. 65nm brought Intel up a crapload so don't say its not going to make much difference for K8. There's celerons with 65nm that go from 3.33ghz to 5ghz ~the old architecture w/AIR cooling, try that with any 90nm.

My point~ until we see some results who knows. I could care less who pulls ahead, I'm not upgrading anytime soon. When I do I'll probably be stuck getting something cheap(AM2 or C2D will be just that by then)~ this rig is still doing what I need it to just fine.
