They compare it to an E6300 - the entry level Conroe - and it still doesn't beat it. AMD just reduced their power consumption, they didn't catch up much in the performance department, so I don't see how you can be too impressed with this...

The 65nm chips weren't designed to beat the Conroes. It was, to my knowledge, only supposed to be a die shrink so the only thing that is supposed to change is the power consumption. Conroe's advantage is having a better architecture on a better manufacturing process. AMD is leveling the playing field a bit by catching up with the manufacturing process with these 65nm chips and then catching up with the architecture with K8L (hopefully) so this is still an achievement regardless of how it performed on the benchies.
