Basically, the worse the finish of the heatsinks and IHS surface, the better the results.
No need to practice on anything other than the CPU it's going to be used for. The method is actually quite similar to buffing a car, in that you apply more than needed, grind it in, very gently wipe off the surface excess (you can use a dulled razor too), and after both surfaces are done, just a very small dot in the center.
I have seen as little as 2C on processors I've lapped perfectly (and the HSF is lapped), to as much as mid-to-high double digits drops on rough CPU's and less than perfect HSF plates (think milled surface like the TRUE).

You recon it's worth trying? I have an i7 and a HR-02 Macho.
I most likely will redo the paste anyway, and the method doesn't sound too difficult, don't think much can go wrong right?
