geforce7800gs < radeon 1300xt(Updated, first post explains whole thread)

Updated for people seeing this for the first time.

Ive editted this for up to page 9.

Edit till page 5 now.

Currently, my ATI Radeon x1300xt Pro is giving me better performance than my BFG GeForce 7800gs oc.

Ive run memtest to see if theres anything wrong with my ram, nothing came up.

Im using the exact same Motherboard for the 7800GS that Im using for the 1300xt.

The psu isnt lacking, its a 450Watt PSU and its 12v has 17A. I also tested it with a 550Watt with 12v of 18A, no difference, I couldnt find anything better than the 550Watt.

Ive used multiple types of drivers for the GeForce, only 3 of them actually worked, the one that came on the cd and Forceware 84.63, and tweakrus forceware. The other drivers dont recognize the card.

Ive used drivercleaner to clean all drivers and reinstall new ones, more than once. I followed all the instructions.

Ive tried using a different card, went to Futureshop(canadas bestbuy) and exchanged it for another one. Both were the same.

Company of Heroes was getting much better FPS with the 1300xt, Anti-Aliasing was always turned off.

These are the aquamark ratings:
1300xt Pro
6228
6772

7800gs
5913
6848

Page 8 edit:

So apparently it may have something to do with the heat in the casing. Testing with prim95 the cpu goes to 66 celsius(according to Everest) and throttles between 11-77%(according to throttlewatch).

The cpu would idle above 60celsius with case closed. Now its at 58 celsius with the case open and a fan on high pointed at it. GPU temp has also dropped from 48 to 46/47, not much of a difference.

Im going to get thermal pasting and a new case and see if this fixes the problem.

Page 9 edit:

K so I got a new fan, CPU now idles at 43-46. It hasnt gone above 49 under stress.

new 3mark06 scores:
5955
6901
41536

Yay my score for cpu went up about 40 points, and my gpu by 50...
The problem still persists. Im getting low performance.

Welcome to OCN!!!
I might come off a bit rough with this reply....
But what did you buy the new card for?
If it was for a learning experience with new components then you must dig deeper and find the right driver and the right settings for the card w/driver.

Did you completely remove the old ATI drivers and then install the latest nVidia drivers?

Check out Driver Cleaner Pro. It's free software that can get rid of hidden leftovers that cause problems. Uninstall your current drivers, then use it to clean up all the crud left behind by your ATI and nVidia drivers. Next reinstall the GeForce drivers.

It is recommended that you pick a 8x.xx driver unless you need support for new games. If you do, pick an early 9x driver, like the 91.47 forcewares. Anything newer won't work well with older cards - older being anything not GeForce 8.

thank you, I bought the card for playing games. Ive actually owned a 7800 from before summer, I planned on moving to california but couldnt stay, on my way back I brought my pc with me and the mobo, sound card and video card stopped working. I bought a 1300xt pro for about a week or so and then decided I wanted my old card back, went to a store like bestbuy and got a 7800gs.

I remember the card working much better than currently.

When I came home yesterday with the new card I uninstalled all ati and nvidea drivers and anything else from add/remove. I then dld omegga drivers but it couldnt seem to detect the card, I then dld an older version of it and the same thing happened. I dld the newest forceware(97.44), when i tried to install it would say :"The NVidea setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."

I also tried going into device manager > Video Controller(VGA Compatible) > updating driver > Install from a list or spec loc. > Dont search I will choose driver

When I picked the .inf in have disk from the 97.44 forceware, it shows up as 8800gt and gtx and no other cards. With both omegga drivers it shows a list of nvidea cards but none of them are 7800 gs or gt or gtx, 7800 the number just isnt there.

Does this have something to do with the card being from BGF Tech and coming oc'd by about 25/50mhz?

Cause when I install with the cd rom they gave me, it installs. But after installing that way I can say without a doubt that the 1300xt pro is better than this thing... even when I ocd it more, an extra 50/100

Anyways, I tried going into safe mode and uninstalling every ati/nvidea software with driver cleaner, still had the same problem as above. Im also going to add that it took an unusually long amount of time for windows safe mode to load, 8+ minutes.

To use Driver Cleaner Pro:
Uninstall current drives
Reboot
Go into Safe Mode
Install and run DC Pro for nVidia and ATI
Reboot into normal Windows
Install new drives

BTW... DC Pro offical is no longer free. They are charging $10 for it now so make sure everyone save yourself a copy just in case.
Once again...

Thats exactly what I did, I used dc pro with it too. It didnt fix the problem, my 7800gs still doesnt show up in any of the drivers except the one on the cd.

This is the method i generally reccomend for DC :

Installing Graphic card driver efficiently!!! When you Update your graphics cards drivers theres ways that you should go about it. Follow these simple steps below.

1.Download and install ''Driver Cleaner'' Here:
http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.html
2.Uninstall your Current Display drivers such as your ''ATI'' or ''Nvidia'' drivers.
3.Now run ''Driver cleaner'' and depending on the Drivers you have you will have to select either ''ATI'' or ''Nvidia'' from the drop down menu. Only select the main title of the driver in the drop down such as just ''ATI'' or ''Nvidia''
4.Once you have selected Your driver click on the ''Start'' button and this will now start the driver cleaning process. ( Do this twice to be sure )
5.Now reboot your system and Download the latest Nvidia or ATI and go ahead and install them.

Doing this avoids driver corruption and conflicts so you can now enjoy smooth gameplay.

Thats exactly what I did.

For ATI though, when I try using driver cleaner, it keeps uninstalling things in the registrey in hkeylocalmachine/system/currentcontrolset/enum/root/
Ive tried using DC 3 times, I even reset before doing it the third and it would still uninstall a bunch of things(most of them had the name Legacy in them)
