decided not to use an A-10. Went with a FX-4100 instead using my old Gigabyte GA-990FX-UD5 MB with 16gigs of Ballistix sport 1600mhz.

What are the specs for the system?

My understanding is that the 4100 isnt really worth it, you would probably be better off with a 6300. But If you're using it as a stepping stone...

The FX 4100 is kind of expensive for what it is .I have it and seen it.For games is ok ,COH servers for example run smoother with the FX than with my PII X4 975 ,in spite of syntetic tests that show the older faster.Maybe the instructions it has over the Phenom are doing the job better.

If it would cost half of the 5600 K for example it would be interesting price wise.
But the price of a new FX 4100 and of a proper AMD AM3+ board is higher than of a FM 2 chip + mobo.It does suck more from the power grid as well to do the job for the same or higher time.
You can overclock it ,but a 5600K CPU part can go higher with no problems and push higher numbers what to say about a 5800K.

I am not able to see any benefit from the L3 cache on the FX 4100 ,it some kind of legacy part of the CPU and i think it is limiting the bandwidth of the memory controller smile.gif

So as long a a six core or octo core is needed by all means go to AM3+ ,otherwise it s a waste to get the AM3+ quads. The price for them it s to high pure and simple.FM 2 is for the future as AMD will push there anything thats new.

If you want high performance go for AM3+ six /octo ,if you want value and mainstream go for the FM2 quads.

If the intention is to drop later a six/octo in ,maybe by then even the FM 2 would get a six core upgrade.
