Using main OS drive in another system

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, I have a western digital 640GB as my main OS drive in my main system. I recently built another system and I was wondering what would be the best way to use this same OS drive in that system. I already tried switching and using the repair option on the windows 7 disc but no luck. I'd like to make this switch without having to reinstall everything. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

Perhaps try this?  The reason it didn't just "work" when you moved the HDD is because the hardware architecture in your new computer is very different from the old one.  If it were similar, Windows would have booted normally and then would have got busy installing a few new drivers when you logged on.
As far as transferring a copy of Windows from one computer to another, the assumption is that you bought and installed the copy of Windows 7 that you're trying to transfer (i.e. that this is not an OEM installation which cannot legally be transferred from one computer to another).
Post back and let us know how it worked!  thumb.gif

Thanks for the link, I tried method 1 but I get a "fatal error" I'm in the process of doing a full backup with windows 7 backup & restore and might go that route, If not I guess I will do a clean install....

Open the command prompt just like you did earlier (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt->Run as Administrator), and type "net stop WMPNetworkSvc" and press [Enter].  Then try sysprep again.  If it still gives you the error, then perhaps you have Internet Explorer 10 installed and your OS is 64 bit?  If so, you might try this link.  Hopefully, between these two options sysprep will work!  smile.gif

You will get the best system performance by doing a clean install, however; so that's not a bad idea.

I tried doing this first http://mickitblog.blogspot.ca/2011/08/fatal-error-occurred-while-trying-to.html but when I have the drive plugged into another computer as a slave and it says to edit that .xml file, the file is nowhere to be found, even if I un hide the system files etc. I am running 64bit Windows and currently have IE unchecked from the programs list so its not installed cause I use other browsers. I will try the thing you first mentioned and report back as soon as I do thumb.gif

EDIT: Tried the net stop WMPNetworkSvc command and tried running sysprep again but still fatal error shows up

Yeah, Windows never really "uninstalls" Internet Explorer, it is too integrated with other parts of Windows.  I'm glad that you went ahead with that fix, and that it worked!  I don't use Internet Explorer either (I'm running Firefox 20).  wink.gif

Yeah, it just hides it when you deselect it in the features list, I'm glad it worked because this install of Windows 7 I've had since release with tons of customization theme wise and not to mention everything I have installed biggrin.gif Thanks again! thumb.gif
