Quick update for anyone besides me that cares:
I've been holding off on this project until the desired parts came to market. Specifically, an LGA 1150 Thin Mini ITX motherboard: ECS H87H3-TI (V1.0)
, I would've much preferred Gigabyte, Intel, Asus, or even ASRock, but a few months into Haswell and no other options in the Thin Mini ITX space, so beggars can't be choosers. And a good proc for the job: Intel i3-4130T
Yaaaaay! All my problems are solved! Right?
Yeah, one, the lowest end 35W TDP CPU is still unnecessarily over inflated in price, and two, the board meets my needs on paper, but it's an ECS board...
Whatever, on with the fun right? Well I'm still waiting to hear back from Mini-Case/ReaLAN/whatever, company that makes, or at least distributes the case I want; the E-Q3i, may be discontinuing the case with no alternative supplier in sight.
But wait! Streacom just started releasing pre-sale samples of their new Streacom FC2 Evo
case at 1.665L (vs 1.98L with the E-Q3i)! Sweet looking case and supposedly still able to carry 2 2.5" HDD's, of course it's a Streacom, so the price is going to skyrocket.
Of course, so will the quality, and with this case, we get fanless cooling! Unfortunately, you have to basically put the entire case together piece by piece, including attaching the heatpipes, AAANNNDDD, there are little guarantees that the custom style CPU mount will line up perfectly with the ECS CPU positioning. Sounds very involving, but hey, who builds sub 2.0L PC's because they're easy?
All in all, some pluses and some minuses here. Mostly price and case incompatibility minuses, but we will see when Streacom actually releases the case for sale. This may end up being a $1.5k build, but it'll be a damn nice one!
