Total War Rome 2 - Page 9

this is my first total war game, i must say the info on how to play, unit management is lacking. after a few days i figured some of the stuff out. took a few cities out today which was nice. i must say its better to play the battles out than use ai to determine the outcome. i think a patch comes out today.

Game is still very much unplayable for me (works fine for a friend with my old GTX 280 rolleyes.gif), but one thing I did notice that may, or may not continue as updates progress but I saw over 3 GBs of VRAM used in the benchmark.

Correction

3.7GBs. redface.gif

This is 3240x1920 Surround. I noticed about 2 GBs of vram used at my same settings in 1920x1080p.

Surprised by the VRAM jump compared to Shogun 2, usual is under 2 GBs with similar settings at 3240x1920.

I think the game just loves to allocate a massive amount of VRAM, I think it's dependent on whether you tick 'unlimited memory' in the graphics settings. I saw just over 2GB usage at 2560 x 1440 with no AA and Unlimited Memory ticked.

It probably does, and has to do with that setting. It's my first time seeing "unlimited memory" as a setting in a game. I must not play a lot of games then lol.

Most people saying it won't support SLI/CF probably don't realize Rome II is based on the same game engine as Shogun II. Which, supports multi-GPUs pretty well currently. Some don't understand Sega and TCA's way of "releasing" a product wink.gif.

This is an AMD oriented title if I remember correctly (a future bundle offer also?), just sad they beat Nvidia in regards to multi-gpu support lol. Need those optimizations from TCA though, 25 fps no matter what settings tongue.gif.

Turn Shader Model to 4 and voila graphics dont look as bad. However, you miss out on features, dunno what though, prob Dx11 related? However Shogun 2 > Rome 2 still in graphics and performance.

Anyway the UI is horrible, whoever did it must have some kind of syndrome, cause its not intuitive at all, nor is it streamlined like the old UI we had in every other total war games, where the Tooltips actually were tooltips, and we didnt have to rightclick everything to find out what s, does. Making an army is just complicated, instead of making them in your towns, you make 329875 generals.... and you have to click the generals OUTSIDE your city and THEN recruit... like wth were they thinking?

And unit cards / flags really dont tell you much.

And they should rid the Capture and Hold crap theyve introduced, cause it doesnt work and confuses the AI so the AI breaks down.
And why cant 2 ships board another ship, its illogical. Only one ship at a a time + ships catch fire whe nthey take damage, LOL when no one has fire or oil.. and how can a tiny little ship ram a super big one at only 5 meters of acceleration? LOGICCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC pisses me off when a tiny ship > big ships. Plus the ridiculous amount of wood splinters flying, there shouldnt be any at all, wood doesnt explode, it bends and cracks.

did a quick comparison:
resolution: 2560x1440

I've got my 3570k overclocked up to 4.6 ghz, with a 7950 overclocked up to 1200 core and 1700 memory.

I could overclock my 3570k up to 4.7 ghz. Would it be beneficial for this game?

My gpu usage in the benchmark is around 85-90%.

It depends, I know this game like 1-2 fast cores, so getting it as high as you can will be beneficial. Issue is I don't know how much 100 MHz will net you, maybe a few more frames, maybe a lot. Give it some testing. I say you are pretty good right now, and the 100 MHz jump may not be wroth the added temps, volts, and other variables.

Another GPU would help more, well, it might to some. When I got my 3rd Titan it made it possible for me to play Shogun 2, 3240x1920 @120 Hz with 4xAA and everything ticked at above 90 fps during battles in the open. Though I'd wait longer before you would even consider another card, if you would for this game, as in the future CF/SLI support will only get better, just like in Shogun II.
