suggestion for distro for my son

Thread Starter
i'm finishing up a computer for my 4y/o son this week, but i really do not want to drop $100 on windows. however, my son is pretty proficient with windows, so i think something similar with a task bar and desk top icons would be best.

should i go with ubuntu? or is there something else that would be very beginner/child friendly?

i know vrey little about linux. sorry.

1gb ddr400 (twin mos)
80gb seagate
sapphire x1300pro
ultra 400w psu

he just needs to be able to play kids games (no real 3d demanding) and i'd like to be able to play dvd's (vobs from the hdd). he will be using a 27" tv for a display.

Fedora or debian. If you want your son to learn linux, please, please don't give him ubuntu. Give him fedora core with a user account with a couple more privilages than normal but don't give him the root password.

I think if you're looking for simplicity, then go with Ubuntu. It's the only linux distro that I've ever succeeded to install (after all, I only have tried that and Red Hat( plus all the Ubuntu "brothers")(I didn't install succeed in installing Red Hat because I was scared to lose data)
But if you want him to pwn some windows guy in the future, go with what The Jester advised, after all, he is the linux l33t over here !

Uhhh, well if I'm not mistake most linux distro's support the same games, so you'd have to find a list of supported games because as far as I know.... Well, I don't know. I'm not a linux gamer, so you'd have to check that on your own.

However there is something I remember called WINE but I actually haven't read any of it to actually know what it does other than emulate something so you can play windows games? I think...
