Well, its true. But onboard sound or a cheap solution wouldn't make justice there.

Agreed. But at least if he buys decent headphones he will have a good base. A good source or an amp can always be added down the track, and he won't be limited by dodgy cans.

ATH M50's should be fine for you. They are frequently on sale for $100.

They are not good for games, limited soundstage and bassy. More ideal for dubstep music and such genres.

I forgot that MP games was a criteria. I don't generally play FPS MP games so sound positioning and stuff like that isn't needed really. And the MP game I do play (WoT) doesn't require any real positioning.

AKGs are tricky in that regard. They take a ton of current compared to other headphones, and need a lot of power despite having such a low impedance. I'd equate them to planar-magnetics in that sense.

Regardless, I would still choose either the MKiis or ATH-M50s. Both are great headphones, but if you didn't want to invest in an amp, M50s might be the best choice there. They're balanced, and they still have enough bass while not drowning anything else out.
I'd agree with MusicPC in that they don't have a great soundstage, so maybe not the best for FPS gaming, but they aren't overly bassy to me, course that's all subjective anyway.
