Which HDD for my WDTV Live?

Hi all,

I've got a WDTV Live media player and the HDD I've got for it at the moment (Freecom Mobile Drive Classic II 320GB) is full, so I'm looking for a new one.

It needs to be no bigger than the WDTV Live box itself if I can help it, and needs to run purely from the USB cable, power and all. I'm thinking 3TB or 4TB (depending on price). It's going to be used purely for storing and playing High Def media.

The question I've got is, will any external HDD do the job, or do I need to have certain specs? Like the cache or spin speed etc...

Any help with specs would be greatly appreciated, as I'm not massively clued up hard drives. Links etc also, if you have any recommendations!

Thanks a lot smile.gif

With those requirements your going to be limited on what type of hard drives that you are able to use, which also limits your capacity down to 2TB. External hard drives that are 3.5" are going to require external power supply in most cases and will be a little bit bigger than the WD Live box.

The 2.5" portable hard drives are what your looking for as they will run off USB power and are around the same size. Currently the biggest portable hard drives are around 2TB and run about $150.

As far as cache, speed, etc.. these will not affect playback and shouldn't affect compatibility most 2.5" portable hard drives are plug n play and should work with no problems.

The linked hard drives are the type of hard drives you will wanting to look at as they will be able to run off USB power and are relatively small

Huge thanks for your response! Really helpful! Those drives are something to think about.

I see my issue now with regards needing external power if I go for a 3 or 4TB, Maybe I'll have to stomach it!

The only reason I didn't want to have to run it from external power was if I am mobile! However that being the case, I wouldn't be running the WDTV Live either, as there'd be no external power! To be honest I can just use my current Freecom if that's ever the case!

Now I know that I don't need any specifics, any external 3TB will do the trick, right?

How about one of these?

Thanks again!

It looks like it might work. Make sure you have the latest firmware. It looks like people have had issues with getting the WD Live box to recognize the 3tb drives and some have had it work right away.

I went for the Seagate Expansion 3TB drive, and it's been running like an absolute dream since I bought it in June!

No compatibility issues, no reliability issues, just what I was after! biggrin.gif:thumb:
