Some games will use more VRAM for caching than is actually required for the game to run at those settings. BF3 is one, for example, but just because it can use the extra VRAM doesn't mean it needs to, or that it improves performance. You can also make pretty much any game use more than 2GB of VRAM by cranking the AA to ridiculous levels, but if the game is unplayable because of the settings, the amount of VRAM used doesn't really matter.

Here is my little rant about vram.

I believe most people over-hype vram simply because they think more is better. As long as you are using a single screen 99% of the time vram shouldn't be an issue. As was stated by Forceman above me, there are a lot of games that will cache as much vram as they can and therefore it will look like the game is using tons of vram. The amount of vram a game needs and the amount it will cache are completely different.

Honestly I've only run into one problem with my 1.25gb card @ 1080p and that was Skyrim + mssa + 5gb+ of texture mods. And my problem was that after about 30-60min of gameplay SOMETIMES the game would just turn into a stuttering mess and a simple restart of the game would clear out the textures and I was back at it running fine.

Personally, yes, the next graphics card I buy is going to have 3gb+ of vram on it just so that I can be sure I'll be ready for higher resolutions/multi monitors if I should go that path. I highly doubt 2gb will be any wall to any game. And if for some reason it is then most likely you don't even have enough gpu horsepower for that to even matter. Plus a simple reduction in AA or whatever will most likely solve vram problems in future games if there will be any.

Video Card Performance: 2GB vs 4GB Memory
here's one article but with a GTX 680
Quote:
Conclusion

So, what can we glean from all of that? For one thing, with any single monitor the 2GB video card is plenty - even on the most demanding games and benchmarks out today. When you scale up to three high-res screens the games we tested were all still fine on 2GB, though maxing out some games’ settings at that resolution really needs more than a single GPU to keep smooth frame rates. With the right combination of high resolution and high detail, though, there is the potential for 2GB to be insufficient. For future games, or perhaps current games that were not tested in this article, you might be better off with a 4GB card if - and only if - you plan to run across a multi-screen configuration.

Here's the one I was thinking of.
Quote:
We've given the ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU II 4GB video cards plenty of opportunities to prove to us why we would need 4GB of VRAM on these. Unfortunately, these have come short of proving this. We tried pushing a single ASUS GTX 670 4GB to the max on a 30" display, at more than playable settings, and also at 1080p. We saw no advantages with a single card. Then we put two together in SLI and tried to push them to the max at 5760x1200. What we found was that higher settings were possible to enable, but the performance wasn't there to allow them to be playable. Simply, the performance of GTX 670 isn't enough to utilize the capacity of 4GB of VRAM.

Bf3 multiplayer and sniper elite def take more than 2gb at 1080p. Haven't tested on newer games so can't speak to those but I'd go with 3gb+ on any new card purchase..4 if going widescreen.

I would have said 2GB is enough for 1080p gaming, until Crysis 3 maxed out the 2GB in my 680. Now I set my theme to Windows 7 Basic to free up VRAM before I launch C3.

If that's any hint of things to come, I'm kind of wishing I bought the 4GB model.
