First build (1600$) - Done ! Buildlog on its way ! - Page 23

The reason I said it makes more sense to go M-ATX instead of ATX is
1: Price
2: Size
Don't you want as small a tower as you can get?
I have a Phantom 820. Moving it is just ridiculous.
Also, if it gets to the point where you're rich and you care enough about building computers to go 4-way SLI, like full watercooling loop, don't you think you'd upgrade your components (won't that be awhile from now)?
Keep in mind, by the way, there are boards (ex) that can fit two 2 slot GFX cards and a soundcard (actually, that's the only M-ATX one I can find, but it's a nice board).
Personally I'd keep with a simpler/cheaper water AIO (the h80i) if you do think you're gonna watercool in the future. For what you're doing you probably don't need that beefy cooling. My 3770k gets along a 4.0ghz on air with decent temps.
I understand the reasoning for the RAM.
If you do have other storage drives, then yeah a TJ08 or a PS07 or an SG09/SG10 might not work. Plus if you were gonna go with the M3 you'd have to put the second GFX card in the bottom slot, meaning you'd need 5 total PCIe slots, and only a couple M-ATX cases have them (like the 350D).

I guess if you're not moving the tower at all, go ahead and buy full ATX. But if you do really get into this expensive-ass hobby, you'll probably find yourself moving it more.
If you don't go with M-ATX, and you want this thing to last forever and for you to not really have to make major upgrades like the motherboard, you'll probably want to buy the most expansive slot motherboard right at the start; something with 4+ PCIe.

As for the graphics cards, don't go with 770s. You're just waiting extra time for nothing; you already have the rest of your components. I'd recommend getting a 670 4GB FTW. The extra GDDR5 is worth it.

Brb, gotta go take a final, lol.

Yeah, that's how I was able to get my hands on a 3770K for around 85 USD (plus shipping around 30$) so for a grand total of 120$.
Still saving 200$ on the original product, that will allow me to change from h80i to h100i and to go for the 650D instead of the Arc Midi R2 also I am still waiting to see both cases in person to express a definitive opinion on the matter and believe me it is quite hard to find a shop having these items in stock here in Canada..

Edit :

@Sethris225 :

The price difference does make sense but the size means less space, less upgrade possibilities, at least to me.
I would rather have Mid Tower than a MATX case, at least for now, later on I might have a second build as a Multimedia center or a computer designed to work only but right now I do not have a need for it, and I'm not even sure I'll have the need for it later on, I'm not the kind that spends for things they don't need (also it is a bit the case in this build since I do not truly need that much power but I want a build that's gonna last quite a while).

Quote:
Also, if it gets to the point where you're rich and you care enough about building computers to go 4-way SLI, like full watercooling loop, don't you think you'd upgrade your components (won't that be awhile from now)?
Of course, I was just being silly wink.gif

I've seen that board earlier on and have heard varied things about it, a disappointing support apparently and mostly a weirdly built SLI configuration (the space between the slots being not big enough, making the choice of the GPU truly limited).

Concerning the h80i or the h100i, it is simply that I can get the h100i for 5 bucks more during deals time so it wouldn't be that much of a price difference especially considering my recent economy, and I could resell a h100i better than a h80i in the future I think, hell I could even pass it to my girlfriend (it would fit nicely on my 'future previous' i7 920).

I'm not going to go full time into this expensive-ass hobby as you call it wink.gif, this is a reasonable build not just a fantasy for a PC enthusiast like me, I could go with a higher budget but that already suits my needs perfectly and even more so why the hell spending more ? I simply want to be able to build a PC from A to Z - as I already repair computers on a daily basis - to perfect my knowledge and my own experience, I also love playing around PCs so.. I was originally going for an Ultra Tower and I am now oriented toward a Mid Tower (the 650D being around 20 lbs while the previous was around 30). I do move my current setup for LANs but it is right now heavier, more around 30 lbs, a really badly built chassis and uselessly heavy, thanks Gateway (as I said, I was dumb at the time). So, in conclusion, it's already going to be a better experience for me, in term of case quality, weigh and look. Also I'll check deeper in MATX cases and MATX possibilities, you never know, I might be irresistibly attracted after all wink.gif.

My budget for the MOBO would be around 200$ MAX, I'm currently checking Asus / MSI & Gigabyte, I do not why I'm avoiding ASrock as some of my friends have them and are not reporting any issues with them.

The FTW+ does sound like a good idea and deal actually, thanks for the good advice !
Btw, about the RAM, you did not answer, between the GSkill and the Kingston, which would you go for ?

I hope your final went well !

Hm. If you don't find an M-ATX case/MB you like, then the 650D is great.
If it isn't that much more (for you) than the h80i then the h100i is definitely better (if that wasn't obvious).
As for the RAM (I did forget tongue.gif) I usually prefer Kingston over GSkill but Snipers look really nice. My optimal preference honestly is always Corsair for RAM, so I dunno. Really depends who you like I guess.

As for the Sniper M3, actually if you use the top and bottom PCIe 3 for graphics (in x16/x8), you still have the middle PCIe 2 for a soundcard (at x16). As long as you have an M-ATX case with 5 slots (such as the 350D like I said).

So if you do eventually want a sound card and a second GFX card, I still think I'd go for the 350D + the Sniper M3 any day. The H100i would fit perfectly in it too.

If you stay in the mid tower range then the 650D is a great case. By the way, the H630 isn't nearly as big as you think; NZXT super exaggerates it. Only 26mm (about an inch) taller and 21mm longer than the 650D. The Arc Midi r2 is so nice too... Personally think the Define R4 looks nicer. This is why I always recommend smaller form factors; it's easier to decide on the case haha.

There are quite a few good Z77 motherboards, and there's that awesome free 8GB of Crucial memory deal on Newegg.
If I had to recommend some boards off the top of my head:
In your budget:
1
2
Slightly above your budget:
3
4

Really appreciate that, thanks

@Sethris225 :

I do like MATX case, some are just astounding even ! But it's simply not the kind of setup I am looking for right now smile.gif. Concerning the h100i over the h80i, the performance overall won't be extreme but for 5 bucks, I might as well take these 2 to 3 degrees.

I'll go with either Corsair, Kingston or GSkill, 1866 or 1600, under 70$.
Yeah, but you've to plan ahead and take flexible SLI cables, right ?
Also, do you think I could repaint the M3 if I were to go for it ? (to paint the green spots in black &/or white), would that be too risky ?

I would've liked to see them in person, but here in Quebec (the city) and the region, there is pretty much nothing, not a single company that would have that kind of product in stock, therefore I'm going to keep watching reviews and unphotoshoped pictures around the web.

Concerning the MOBO : It will depend of my budget at time of purchase (will still be waiting for Haswell & 7XX due to the price variations they'll cause tongue.gif), if I'm tight, I'll go with the Asrock Extreme4, if I'm not too tight I'll go with either the UD5H, the Extreme6 or the P8Z77-V and if I'm not tight, I'll go with the Sabertooth !

I did however this little comparison, for future reference and help to guys like me,
I hope it'll be able to help other chose their cases between the one above

Here is a case dimension comparison between the 350D, the Arc Midi R2, the Define R4, the 650D and the H630 !

UD5H has much better VRMs above any ASRock boards and will be much more efficient (Saving your power bills, i guess?)
As for RAM it's not advised to go Corsair, if you do want to OC you will suddenly discover you can only barely a little bit tongue.gif
Go with G.Skill or Kingston

The Extreme4 is a great board for the value.
I've made two systems with them with no problems.

Painting the M3 would be really difficult/scary. A couple people have done it but it's usually risky. You can't really spraypaint them without messing up the pins, so you usually have to hand paint them.
You'd probably be better off buying a diff board as much as I hate to say it.
There are always these and these, which could cover the remaining slots until you got your second 670 and soundcard.

By the way DaveLT, proof please (about the RAM)?

Thread Starter
Waiting for the source about Corsair RAM, I'll check a bit on the net see if I can find something about it. Also, concerning the UD5H over the Extreme4, it's all a matter of budget really, most often the more you pay the quality but you can find some really good mobos at a decent price, the difference won't necessarily be noticeable and/or I will not use the supplementary features, my main concern is ports, PCI ports and onboard audio.

I'm quite good at hand painting but not truly familiar with painting motherboards, I'll check some thread about it and see if I think I could handle it or not. If anything thank you a lot for these links, quite a cool website !

Case why, I am leaning toward the 650D or the Define R4 w/ window, also it's wc abilities are not as good as the R2, I'll check again some ttgl reviews. I'll post my comparison in the H630 as well, it might help some people smile.gif

Extreme4 is great value BUT UD5H is in a different category (More like being compared to the Extreme6) but also it's got way better VRMs
RAM? Search around. It's been on OCN for a long time now, when vengeance first launched it was good and everything until corsair literally started becoming a ... Corsair

Every single model up to including the Dominator Plats have been seriously tightly binned
