First real OC..RAM TIMING ISSUES

Thread Starter
I finally got the guts to push my e6600 to 3ghz today, here's the cpu-z link, but my ram timings are all screwed up, 5-6-6-18. Can anyone tell me how to tighten them? My ram is a single stick of gskill pc6400 cas4 that I have oc'ed to 999mhz, pc8500. Are those timings alright for overclocked ram?

Thanks

Give me a second and I'll edit this post...

EDIT: Ok, Well you will find that most overclocks like tighter timings better than higher speeds. But it doesn't always go that way so you will have to test it out and see what your system likes.

As for you timings, with the PC6400C4 RAM you have to be at ~1Ghz is great, but I'm not sure it's worth it to have them at those timings. I think you should drop your divider and tighten down those timings. Like I said, tighter timings tend to perform better.

But you can try and tighten down your 5-6-6-18 right now and then benchmark it with something like SuperPi 1M or run memtest86 for a pass and see if it passes. Try 5-5-5-15 and see if you can run that. If you can, that'd be like having a stock set of PC-8500C5. Which is damn good considering you didn't pay PC-8500C5 prices for it!

how do you lower timings? In bios?

edit: Do you change the divider in bios?

Sorry, I'm new to the OC business

Hey don't worry about it. We all were new at one point!

But yes, you are correct! You lower the RAM timings and change the divider in the BIOS. First thing I would advise you to do would be to leave the divider where its at and try to lower those timings to 5-5-5-15.

Then run memtest86 for one pass. That should take 15-25 min. Although you only have a 1GB stick so maybe less time than that. If you get through a whole pass without any errors then it's fine.

Then you can try and lower the timings again if you'd like. 5-5-5-12 maybe? You really have to play with it and see what you can get out of it!

I don't know if you are familiar with the p5w bios, but would it be under 'advanced', 'jumper free configuration'? Because that is where I OC'ed both the cpu and ram. If not, where do you think it would be?

Yes, most ASUS boards are fairly similar. The RAM timings and divider should be on the same screen. Does this look like your BIOS?

That is where you would change the timings.

Dram Ras# Precharge
2-6 clocks
Dram Ras# to Cas# Delay

EXACTLY!!!! ok cool, thanks!!!

What about voltage, will lowering the clocks change the voltage needed?
right now the voltage is set to auto: 1.8 volts

If you can't pass memtest86, or even POST with you timiungs like that, then yes, you will need to raise the vDIMM. Try 2.0v at 5-5-5-15 I would say. If not, increase it from there.
