Displayport 1.2 cable

Thread Starter
I'm getting a U2713HM in the next few days and I need a displayport cable. Displayport 1.2 is the standard my graphics card supports and I'm a little confused whether I have found the right cable for my needs. I have been looking at three different options:

cheap

a bit expensive: lists support for displayport 1.2 and up to 1600p

really expensive: lists support for displayport 1.2 and up to 2160p

The cheap one has a bandwidth of 10.8 Gbit/s, which would make it displayport 1.1. The other two is displayport 1.2, but one is listed as supporting up to 1600p while the other is 2160p. I found this article which mentions that displayport 1.2 supports 3840x2160 @ 60 Hz, so I find it a little strange they say only up to 1600p for the 'bit expensive' one at the store website. Shouldn't it be 2160p as well or are there something special about the 'really expensive' one which make it support 4k?

So far I'm leaning towards getting the one thats a bit expensive. It supports the 1.2 standard and I'm hoping the specs in the shop is incorrect and it does support 4k. It may not be important now, but I thought it would be nice to get a high end cable I can use with a 4k monitor in a few years. There are a few other displayport 1.2 features that would be nice to have, so I think that would be the right cable for me to get, unless some you guys have other ideas? like perhaps cheap displayport 1.2 cables. I live in Europe though, so no need to post links to cheap cables in the US.

If you can find this one Accell UltraAV B142C-007B

http://www.amazon.com/Accell-UltraAV-B142C-007B-DisplayPort-Latches/dp/B0098HVZBE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1367952930&sr=1-1&keywords=displayport+cable+1.2

But I don't really know where you live and the website you posted don't have many choices.

Quote:
Versions

1.0 to 1.1
DisplayPort 1.0 allows a maximum of 8.64 Gbit/s data rate over a 2 meter cable.[12] DisplayPort 1.1 also allows devices to implement alternative link layers such as fiber optic, allowing a much longer reach between source and display without signal degradation,[13] although alternative implementations are not standardized. It also includes HDCP in addition to DisplayPort Content Protection (DPCP).

1.2

DisplayPort version 1.2 was approved on December 22, 2009. The most significant improvement of the new version is the doubling of the effective bandwidth to 17.28 Gbit/s, which allows increased resolutions, higher refresh rates, and greater color depth. Other improvements include multiple independent video streams (daisy-chain connection with multiple monitors), facilities for stereoscopic 3D, increased AUX channel bandwidth (from 1 Mbit/s to 720 Mbit/s), more color spaces including xvYCC, scRGB and Adobe RGB 1998, and Global Time Code (GTC) for sub 1 µs audio/video synchronisation. Also Apple Inc.'s Mini DisplayPort connector, which is much smaller and designed for laptop computers and other small devices, is compatible with the new standard.

Display port 1.2 is suppose to transfer the same data so I don't know why the one that is " a bit expensive" don't mention up to 2160p

I live in Denmark. I found it at Amazon UK but no stock.

I looked at Lyndy's website, which is the company who make the cable I wanted to buy.

Link to cable

It does say displayport 1.2 and 17.28Gbps bandwidth, but a bit futher down the page it says:

Technical Specifications
10.8 Gbps forward link channel supports high resolution monitors up to 2560 x 1600 with a single cable

I'm not sure if they somehow gimped the cable or what's up. Anyway I don't think it's worth buying the cable if it doesn't support 4k. It costs just under $40. I think I'll just buy the cheap 1.1 cable now and get a 1.2 cable a bit later when I can find a cheap one that supports 4k.

The FAQ at http://www.displayport.org/faq/ says ...

Q: Where can I buy a DP 1.2 cable? Most of the cables are certified to DP 1.1a.

A: The DisplayPort version 1.2 standard was designed to utilize the Standard Display cable. We did this intentionally to avoid customer confusion. A DisplayPort cable is a DisplayPort cable; EXCEPT if it a “reduced bit rate” (or RBR) cable, which is typically a 15m cable designed for projector applications, and they only support up to 1080P; OR if it is an active cable, which will not support the new HBR2 rate introduced in the DP 1.2 standard.

So a cable that was tested to meet the DP 1.1a requirments also meets the DP 1.2 requirements.
