[Chiphell] AMD Volcanic Island chip design leak and specs? - Page 24

Since AMD is basically the company behind making the GDDR standard (well they contributed a lot), I don't see how they couldn't put GDDR6 in Volcanic Islands. Just a quick google showed me that we are supposed to expect it by 2014. With the card probably coming out late this year, and probably the rest of the generation coming out early 2014, that's pretty close. Heck, there may be a reason why they went with a 512-bit bus that isn't for bragging rights. GDDR3 brought us DDR, GDDR5 brought us QDR, and maybe GDDR6 will give us ODR (PURE speculation). With that much bandwidth, you're going to need a large bus in order to handle all of it.
Actually it would easily considering this card is a new arch on a new node with everything doubled this should destroy Titan II/ultra since it only has 1 extra smx which would only put it 8% above Titan clock for clock with excellent scaling.
So unless they beef up the power phases and allow overvoltage I mean real overvoltage there is nothing that can make the GK110 beat a new arch new node chip
post #232 of 458
Even then the titan will fall short because this new node will probably clock higher and not to mention a titan is about 35% faster than a 7970 GE so lets say tghat the new card is 2x faster than a 7970 ge so it already has a 65% lead if it has similar clockspeeds to the 7970 GE.

Totally depends on what the absolute headroom is for the card, if say titan overclocks 20% more and so does the 9970 from their base clocks, then the gap will remain.

Typical that people will compare new gen to last gen, this 9970 should be compared to GM110 Maxwell variant, not Titan.

Fermi --> Kepler was impressive, Kepler --> Maxwell will be even more so.

We bump into each other a little too often but the reason Kepler was so great was because it lacked nearly all its gpgpu capabilities it actually loses to previous gens in gpgpu tasks.
Can't wait for both

I was really leaning towards buying a 2nd 7970 and starting to crossfire once the frame pacing / crossfire fix drivers were released this summer, but if this turns out to be true... I think I'll just wait for the 8970.

9970 that will probably be as they could dedicate the hd8XXX for oem cards which are GCN rebrands of current cards.

When it's not horribly locked down, Kepler fares reasonably well at compute versus Fermi; the problem is, GCN is a compute monster, so GK110's lead in compute isn't very large.

That's primarily the reason why I haven't upgraded. wink.gif GK104 didn't entice me, and Titan is too expensive.

I really do hope AMD brings competitively priced 20nm cards at the end of the year, the competition is needed badly.

WHen I read that and saw it was a MCP35X2, I thought this guy is being facetious. It's a trick question.

I was skeptical, when one day Pedro stated that 120mm is all that you needed per gpu block, you guys blasted him....I'm not expert on these things, I saw 4 mcp655 on a build here though...
