Keep in mind the large die was due to AMD selecting the more OC friendly 80nm node instead of the then current 65nm node which made it power hungry and hot running while not really OCing that well either. The HD3870 was much the same GPU with a smaller memory interface and it sold fairly well.

I disagree. It carries about as much water as me drawing a sketch of 14nm Broadwell and duping a couple of web sites to run the image as 'news'. Just because I can draw 8 or 10 cores and say 'this could happen' doesn't make it any more likely.

Again, I'd love for it to be true, but everybody's currently reading into someone's pipe dream and it's nothing more than that

Depending on where AMD will price the 9970, Titan's resale value may plummet. If AMD price the 9970 at $1000, maybe those with Titans can get away with~$650. But if AMD price the 9970 at $600, like the 7970, then Titan owners are screwed. they'd be lucky to get $450. That's a 55% depreciation in less than a year. That's capitalism for you.

And those who think that the 9970 isn't 20nm/4096sp is a moron! When AMD went from the 55nm 4870 to the 40nm 5870, they doubled the stream processors. When they moved from 40nm to 28nm, they again doubled the transistor count 2154M to 4313M. It was obvious since they scrapped the HD8XXX series that this was coming...

A man can dream but indeed it is very possible.
I eat my shoes if they manage to use the 16nm 3d transistor for the gen after that though.

... Dropping to 20nm would allow them to double their transistor count without much change to die size. That aspect of the rumor (again, IF they use 20nm) is 100% possible.

if 8970 draws 350w and then you overclock it to 425W then your standard 1500W psu wont be able to hold 4 8970 + lets say 3930k. so while enthusiasts dont care about electricity bill, they do care about being able to pull their 4 graphic cards. now i would at max go with a 3 cards but who will got with quad amd if you cant get a proper psu for such machine?

Except GCN 2.0 already gets 25-50% more performance per watt. The 7790 and Malta prove this, by both being above 20 gflops/w while the others are just 14 to 17.

Even without 20nm, power consumption shouldn't be that big a deal.
