Yeah, my experience with open source implementations of AFP is that they tend to be somewhat lacking. My experiences with Samba were worse.

People criticize the Apple "ecosystem," but it really is a blessing for home networking.

Ive never had a bad experience with samba. I think it works quite well, its free, and linux is so low on the min req I can use my raspberry pi as a samba controller

That's cool. I probably just didn't know what I was doing, or... well, it was under Ubuntu back... 6 years ago? A lot of messing around with the .conf file. Things might have improved since then redface.gif

You might want to look into SnapRAID. It can run on top of OS X (or Linux/*nix or Windows tongue.gif). It's snapshot redundancy so you'd probably only want to use it for static data, though (e.g. Blu-ray/DVD rips, etc). Maybe run it on schedule nightly or something?

You wouldn't catch me dead using RAID-5 with 24 drives as a single volume.
