Cutting cables from PSU okay?

Thread Starter
So I have a Node 304 with a dedicated gpu and a noctua nh d14 installed so space is at a premium.

I have a be quiet straight power e9 400w PSU but it is not modular. I only use one molex for a fan controller and one SATA connector for ssd. This leaves me with a huge clutter of unused wires.
There are two cables coming out of the PSU each of which have the sata and molex connectors on them. Can I cut one of the cables loose or will this cause a circuit shortage?

Thanks

You can cut one off as long as you make sure the exposed cables are properly insulated afterwards using something like electrical tape or shrink tubing.

I'm not sure but I'll say as long as they're insulated and not touching anything, then they should be fine.

I chose for that wattage because a system is at idle/low power most of the time. And every PSU becomes less eficient below 10-20% of rated wattage. This being a mini itx board it already draws less power. So i need to make sure to draw at least 10%-20% of rated wattage, here being 40-80 watt. I think this is achieved with an asus p8z77-i deluxe mini itx, 3570k and 670. If i went for 500-600watt then my idle draw would become more because of inefficiency at low loads. And I am sure my rig won't draw more than 300 watt while gaming. Wish I had a watt meter.

I am using it like this for month now and so far no problems at all. Wish I could see the actual power consumption though.
