I just purchased:
2 x 120mm fans
2 x 140mm fans
2 x 80Gb Velociraptor Drives

The 4 fans are nothing special, found them on Geeks.com for a few bucks each. SO I'm guessing they are no name brand, but they are a pretty good Amperage rating, .18A for the 140mm, and .20A for the 120mm. From what I've read on my old fans and others, the amperage rating gives me an idea of what the RPM will be. I have an old 80/92mm cpu fan that is rated at .46A and it gives off about 3500-4000 RPM when I give it 12 volts. It pushes a lot of air. Now, I dont claim to know all the details, because I am by far a know it all, but to me, these fans seem like they would do well to facilitate the airflow within my case in the extra fan slots the 500R has. I will see hopefully next monday or possibly sooner how they perform.

The Velociraptors I got at a great deal. 20 bucks a piece. I decided I would try to run RAID off of them and use those as the dedicated OS drive. Giving my other 2Tb drive and 1Tb drive a little extra space to hold my ever growing stash of games and music.

Back to the sleeving though, I just began sleeving the 8 pin cable last night before bed. And I was quite disappointed to discover that the cables that attach to the extra 4 pin were pretty shoddy. 2 wires of the extension adapter were not even touching the metal pins, there fore not getting any contact at all. I removed those wires, as they were obviously in my way and never going to be used, making it easier to sleeve the remaining cables. And I have the first 4 of them finished. I forgot to take pictures of them, but when I start again on the rest, I will be sure to add a few photos.

Regarding the amps. You can't actually judge how many RPM you will get or the amount of CFM or even SP. Know that W=V*A we can then find out the require amount of wattage for each fan but it still won't let us determine how good/well they will perform. You'd have to account for the Ohms or impedance of the wires and mechanism the fan utilizes, what type of barring the fan utilizes, and the angle and amount of blades the fan utilizes, if they use a resistor at all, and many more factors. I just thought I'd point that out. Though I do wish you luck with the fans and I hope they work out exactly the way you hoped. Lord knows I've taken a leap of faith before on parts. I bought Akasa Viper fans before anyone knew about them and found out they are crap. I'll send them to you if you want. hahaha jk biggrin.gif

The sleeving looks good btw. thumb.gif

Thanks for the compliment on the sleeving. I'm still not 100% happy with them, as I can see melted plastic still showing, but they look way better than the first attempt. I'm still learning how to get the sleeving to sit cleanly where it will slide into the connector again.

And as for the fans, I'm not basing it off of techincal knowledge, as you are exactly correct about not being able to judge any value solely off of the Amperage. i was just making a guess based off of the results I have gotten from other fans and noticing how when the rated Amperage varied, I could see different results in speed and so forth. These fans were only 3 bucks a piece, so I figured what the hell, I'll try them out.

I'm mostly excited about the 2 Raptor drives coming.

Oh well hell 3 bucks isn't bad. I've spent 20 bucks on fans before. It sucks when you need 8 for just on radiator! eek.gif Now I have to finish my sleeving.

That is exactly why I decided to snag these fans, I could not bring myself to spend more than 10 bucks a piece on fans regardless of how well they are reported or reviewed to perform.

If it pushes a fair amount of air without sounding like a jet engine, why spend 20 or more on one when there is a 5 dollar one that will do the same job.? Haha..

Because 20 dollar fans are worth the money. A fair amount of air and some to a lot of noise or a crap ton of air and no noise. Also things like static pressure, reliability, and overall good general purpose use.

So, can you better explain to me what the "layman's term" of static pressure actually is? And why it has been so sought after?

I can understand the benefits of higher priced fans with the performance they grant. i just personally dont have a need for a crap ton of air, or dead silent fans. At least not until I can afford them without batting an eye or feeling a divot in my pocket afterwards.

i thought about replacing alot of my fans, eventually with silent, high airflow fans. Just to create a near silent operating system. These stock Corsair fans for the H100 are NOT growing on me in the slightest.

CFM is the amount of air a fans going to push
STATIC PRESSURE is how strong its going to push that air under restriction or suction.

if you put your hand infront of a cheap fan, it will slow down. if you put your hand infront of a high static pressure fan it wont slow down that much because the motor is stronger and more consistent.

Ahh. I see why those would be highly sought after then. It makes sense to place high static pressure fans in areas where you'll get more restriction.

So, there are the Corsair SP model fans, and what others that would work best in restricted mounting areas?

Also, in the 500R, the bottom fan mount looks like its mounting holes are the same size as the rear, which use rubber grommets to hold the screws. Would I need a set of those grommets in order to mount a fan to the bottom?

and the best cheap fans you can get are yate loons and xspc. next up is swiftech helix and even their 2000rpm yate loon look-a-like. fans under$10 that are proven to work with both higher cfm and static pressure on rads.
all the bgears ive used have a motor or bearing whine. im guessing bearing. i hate em at speeds over 60%. i know i wont buy ball bearing fans again.

all the bgears ive used have a motor or bearing whine. im guessing bearing. i hate em at speeds over 60%. i know i wont buy ball bearing fans again.
Yea I'm not too fond of the Bearing fans either because of that whine at high speeds. But lately, it has only been a certain few that I've heard that from. I'll see what these new fans coming in the mail sound like though, as they are ball bearing fans too, I believe. The 120mm fans claim they are Brushless motor fans though, so the 140mm's might be the same, although that doesnt exactly tell me if they are sleeve, ball bearing or other such type.

I've never been too concerned about name brands with anything, as I've seen a few times in the past where name brand products do not perform as well as SOME lesser known products.

Nonetheless, if anyone does happen to have old, unused, but still working fans, and would be willing to part with them, shoot me a line. I'd be interested in trying out different types and brands.

And dont worry about the progress of the sleeving, just finished Metro: Last Light, and am now starting on Resident Evil: Revelations today. When I get bored with that, I will start back on sleeving my wires. All of my cables have to come out of my case in order for me to start sleeving each time, and I keep finding something else that I want my computer to be up and running for. haha..It'll get done eventually, though.
