Basic SLI question with Maximus V Formula

Thread Starter
Does anyone know if it's possible to install a SLI setup with one card in the PCIE_X16/X8_1 slot (first red one from the top), one card in the PCIE_X8/X4_2 slot (second red one from the top), and a sound card in PCIE_X4/X1_3 slot (last red one at the bottom) using a i7 2600K CPU?

I have seen conflicting reports about the lane configuration on this board.

I would have placed the sound card in the first slot (PCIEX4_1) but it doesnt fit thanks to the insanely large Phantek cooler.

i would believe the configurations are:

x8,x8,x1 or x8,x4,x4

the former would work (x8,x8,x1) but not the latter since SLI isn't supported on x4 speed. i am sure the BIOS has a PCI-E configuration panel.

EDIT:
nevermind i just looked over on the asus site and had to look at a german manual -seems to be no english tongue.gif

the below post is correct - its just damned silly to waste the 8 PCIE 2.0 lanes from the chipset on 1 x4 and 3 x1 slots . . the only PCIE configuration in the BIOS is to set what gen it is . . tongue.gif

So it basically means that it would not work, and that I would have to sandwich the card between the two SLI cards in a PCIe1x slot?

It shouldn't work. Also manufacturers state that 8/4/4 splitting works only with Ivy Bride, but there are conflicting reports about that too. Anyway the best way to know is to try it out.

Well good news! It works perfectly! Both cards are running at PCI-E 2.0x16@8 2.0, and are configured in SLI in the NVIDIA control panel. The sound card (I'm using an ASUS Xonar Phoebus) is also working fine. thumb.gif
