As I have ranted on in so many other posts, I do love my cougars too. BUT only when they're under 20% or above 80% speed. The PWM whine that is present in between (not only me either apparently) is unbearable unless rig is far/closed off/speed adjusted. But they're too good a performance fan for my 212 Evo to give up...

Cougar's fans are pretty good (the non-LED versions anyways), but yeah there is that PWM sound - I find it to be a "click" type of sound rather than a "whine". They're not the best for any category though, but they do ok. They have a distinct moving air like sound.

Have you tried to re-lubricate those CM fans? They're probably sleeve bearing fans that died out.

The PWM "whine" is so bad I have forgotten about the "click" sound.

Have both. At high RPM the click is more tolerable, but at the same time more apparent... *sigh*. We all learn something right? At least I learned much more now as a n00b, which can only be good for the future...

Really fancy trying out Corsair's AF/SP QE one day. But did I read somewhere they also make strange noises? Or is that the Performance Edition?

EDIT : I personally can't find anything wrong with CM'S XtraFlo that came with the 212 Evo. But for reasons that only makes sense to me, I had to take them off still new...

The Corsairs generally do run loud at their top speed.

http://www.corsair.com/en/cpu-cooling-kits/air-series-fans.html

They have 2 lines - the "AF" series (air flow), and the "SP" series that emphasizes static pressure. They look good (and come with this "ring" that you can swap the color of), but from what I've heard, they're not the top fans, even within their price range. I tried the SPs and from my experiences, they get outperformed by the GTs.

It's hard to describe the audio profile, so here's what they sound like (the SP):

The AF:

It's not going to capture the volume of course, but at least you get to hear the sound profile.

If it bothers you that much, I believe Areocools are supposed to be pretty good fans and they do offer several different sizes and colors.

I was originally gonna go for the Aerocool Sharks, yes. (My case stock Aerocool fans are quiet as ****. Performance, however, another matter.) in the end, colour diversity won me over tongue.gif

As for the Cougar, I've said I'm keeping with it for reasons only I can comprehend... Safe to say though I won't go for another in the future.... Save myself the trouble, y'know? I'm happy with the performance/sound level for now, so... :/

Well I did mod the side and do have a window, and I love the corsair fans with the colored rings, not to mention you can pain the white rings whatever color you want. IMO i love these fans, I think though like you said OCD and brand are not same bother me LAMO. I'm fine with ti really but I wish I had all corsair as that is my favorite brand. I actually have k70 k65 and all corsair that i can have except for case. I only recently realized how much i love corsair and this was after i bought the nzxt phantom, otherwise i would of gone with corsair case. Maybe Ill be willing to sell phantom for a corsair case. Just to satisfy me.

It really comes down to your priorities - aesthetics, price, or performance.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I prefer a balance between all three prioritized by price, aesthetics, then performance. I care about performance but only after the other two because, let's be honest, I'm not gonna really be pushing my computer to the point that I need to worry about a small difference in case fans, especially for the difference in price between the good fans and the best fans.
