With 3x1portrait retina you will get 4608x2048 18,5" screen for 300$ + plexi/metal chassis for it, dunno 50$ max i think.
Cheap but then you need card with 3x DP.
The cheapest such GFX card should cost less than 100$ by now, for example 5770 or 6770 "Eyefinity 5" models with 5x mini displayport. Or you you can got bigger/more recent then there is also relatively recent 7870 models from 3 companies with 6x mini displayport (and some older models of 6870 with 6x dp as well).
Very interesting nevertheless. How hard is it to get the controller board to work ? Is it fully plug and play or do you have to do some black magic to it for it to work?
I am seriously starting the get intrigued by this. The size of the screens is not that huge issue as all it determines is the optimal distance for viewing them. With a good stand it might be entirely possible to get 5 of these ~30..50 cm from your face if you so desire. Ofc at that distance 5 mm bezel would be quite significant compared to, for example, 1 cm bezels at ~80 cm. What I'm thinking is something like this:
Just held up in a custom frame with VESA 100 mount on the backside and with a stand that allows to mount it "in your face" instead of looking at it from ~1 meter. The displays in the picture form an screen array with diagonal of approx 2 meters with resolution of 5400x1920 (5x1 portrait eyefinity). But with the ipad displays ... mmmm ... that would be much higher resolution for about half the price.Edited by Carniflex - 7/4/13 at 3:24am
