I put in a new wireless card and on boot it says "Unauthorized Wireless network card is plugged in. Power off and remove it" and I can't boot Win7 that way, unless I deactivate the card in BIOS. Guess it's a BIOS/mainboard thing. I should have known this could be the case.

Any way to reset this? Do I have to reinstall Win7?

Thats a really strange error. So you cant boot at all unless you remove the card? Maybe try and disable post error messages and let you in. Or you can try booting off a boot disc like hirens

Do you get that error during post or later as it loads windows?

I am on a phone and can't easily check, but is it possible that lenovo whitelists certain cards such that only those cards will work?

It goes like this: I push the power button, and the screen appears that says push F12 for this and that, F2 for setup, etc. When this screen goes away, there is just a black screen and instantly the error message appears at the top in DOS letters. Nothing works then. only Alt+Ctrl+Del to reboot.
When I hit F2 in that first screen I access BIOS and can deactivate the WLAN card entirely, after which Win 7 boots fine, I can use a USB Wlan stick to access internet (with which the laptop had no errors, so the build in card was really the cause of the problems I had with the laptop).

The card I bought is an Intel one:

The one I had is from a brand called "Anatel", if that matters.

I'm really pretty sure that Lenovo whitelists their wireless adapters. I know they do on their higher end models. Meaning you have to use only a few specific wireless cards, and are supposed to get it through them. Alternatively, you can try a modified bios, but that you will need to find on your own and you can brick the machine if you screw up the flash. I know this has been done for other models (T420, I think).

The error you are getting is because the wireless card you purchased isn't on their whitelist. There are methods to modify the card to make it useable here:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_unauthorized_MiniPCI_network_card

http://download.lenovo.com/UserFiles/UserGuide/en/User%27s%20guides%20and%20manuals/B560/Lenovo%20V560B560%20Hardware%20Maintenance%20Manual%20V2.0.pdf

Options:
1. Attempt to modify the laptop
2. Attempt to modify the card
3. Return the card you purchased and buy an authentic lenovo certified card. If you do, I recommend your favorite auction site. You can get a working pull for that exact laptop for something like $30-40. There's also one on Amazon. Both of them are Anatel Atheros.

Alright, I went safe and bought an Intel 5100 for IBM/Lenovo from eBay from a Chinese vendor. Shipment will probably take forever.

Thanks for all the support. I didn't expect whitelisting, but should have. Am a little smarter now.

Hmm, so I received that WLAN card that is supposed to work with the Lenovo, but it does not. Lenovo forums wont help anyway, so I guess I have to flash BIOS. Another option is to change the ID of the card, but all this computer stuff is too complicated for me. mad.gif

This was my last Lenovo.
