Do you mind explaining why in theory it should improve the issue? No one with the proper testing equipment has tested frame caps just yet but I can't imagine capping the frame rate would somehow position the rendering times of the frames better any more than say vsync would.

At what point in the pipeline is the frame rate cap applied? That's basically the question you need to know before you can say whether it solves anything or not.

You could just as easily interpret it to mean there is no amount of analysis on the data that could be considered overly-focused...

This is exactly how Ryan interpreted it. Some people just like playing with themselves too much,

Seems to me like PCPer is the only one to have made the charge that the second AMD card in a CF setup is essentially worthless yet here are the fanboys running around acting as though its some sort of fact now. rolleyes.gif The FACT is that NOBODY has a firm grasp on how these runt frames manifest themselves in terms of user experience and it would be impossible to ever know without polling every AMD CF user out there. There have been plenty of people who have claimed to see microstutter on Nvidia hardware as well (even the supposed microstutter-proof Kepler generation) so are they basically only utilizing one GPU as well or is it somehow just an AMD phenomenon? If you say yes then congratulations: You are officially a fanboy...

However, we've deployed some advanced tools and metrics to answer some very practical questions about the benefits of the 7990's second GPU, and the answers haven't turned out like one would hope. The card just doesn't hold up well under the weight of really tough scenarios where smooth gameplay is threatened. The 7990 does perform a little bit better than its single-GPU counterpart, the Radeon HD 7970, in our Crysis 3 test, but not by a broad margin. The 7990 doesn't offer an appreciable benefit over the 7970 in our Tomb Raider and Sleeping Dogs test scenarios. In each of these cases, the 7990's FPS averages scale to nearly twice the 7970's, but the uneven frame delivery caused by multi-GPU microstuttering blunts the impact of those additional frames. Worse still, the 7990 runs into some apparent CrossFire compatibility snafus in Far Cry 3 and BioShock Infinite, both AAA titles that AMD has co-marketed and bundled with the card itself. Yikes. In those two games, you're literally better off playing with a Radeon HD 7970.

http://techreport.com/review/24703/amd-radeon-hd-7990-graphics-card-reviewed/10

Not surprisingly it's written by Scott Wasson who also wrote the multi-GPU stuttering article back in Sept. 2011: http://techreport.com/review/21516/inside-the-second-a-new-look-at-game-benchmarking , http://techreport.com/news/21625/multi-gpu-micro-stuttering-captured-on-video

Also I fail to see how it's impossible to know how runts manifest in a normal situation. After all the reviewers have the ability to capture RAW output, to capture the exact footage that you will see.

Because FCAT is so solid program rolleyes.gif

From SKYMTL:
Quote:
I will beg to differ about that. Believe it or not, so far, in my initial testing of FRAPS versus FCAT, FRAPS is actually BETTER at showing GPU agnostic issues like the impact (be they positive or negative) of Hyper Threading and the Bulldozer architecture's cyclical memory controller usage.

Also, FCAT is full of bugs right now. For example, one run could show tuns or runts and completely dropped frames while the next looks almost a-ok. If a reviewer doesn't go through at least 3 runs to validate results, false positives are certainly possible.

Anyways, I could talk all day about FCAT.....I'll just go back to actually testing it.

I dont deny the problem but sorry pcper i dont play with 20 fps crysis 3.

That quote was from a while ago. You now also have FCAT integrated into rivatuner and so on, it's come some way from that. And to stress it once more, FCAT itself is just the overlay. What FCAT says can be verified by capturing the raw output to the monitor and checking it out, you can clearly see where the frames change and the overlay matches that. On top of the overlay you have the extractor tools and that's where you get the bugs.

To again quote techreport on the extracting method:
Quote:
when we first tried the extractor tool with videos captured from a Radeon HD 7970, it didn't work quite properly. We asked Petersen about the problem, and he eventually found that the extractor was having trouble because the overlay colors being displayed by the Radeon weren't entirely correct. The extractor routine had to be adjusted for looser tolerances in order to account for the variance.

http://techreport.com/review/24553/inside-the-second-with-nvidia-frame-capture-tools/3

So you have bugs which can be fixed. And even then you can go and verify the results from the raw footage.
