I don't see you EVER owning any AMD hardware to be honest... wink.gif
post #292 of 311
the frame pacing driver from AMD will atleast put AMD back in the multi GPU market. But it looks like AMD needs a knockout product in Volcanic Islands HD 9970 .something like a Radeon 9700 Pro or Radeon HD 4870 which will take Nvidia out of their comfort zone which they are currently in. that will be good news for consumers and better prices overall. thumb.gif

If he does, he is going to have to change to Intel / AMD / Nvidia Enthusiast tongue.gif

I don't see them making that big a jump, even with 20nm to be honest. I think the 8970/9970 will be very good but not enough to slap any sense into Nvidia at the moment...

No one would ever believe it, but I've owned more AMD hardware than Intel / NVIDIA combined. Actually, I've gone back and forth with AMD / Intel, with AMD having a slight lead, but prior to this rig, it was pure AMD for years.

The original "2010rig" plan was 1090T + 5870.

im sort of on the same boat. improved performance, but not lethal. On the CPU front however, I have high hopes.

I am optimistic primarily because of two reasons. GCN 2.0 is going to be a optimized GCN. its not a new architecture like VLIW4 -> GCN. AMD would have tweaked GCN for perf/watt. Drivers should be much more optimized than at GCN launch. AMD has been first to use the latest GDDR technologies. by moving first to GDDR6 they can provide enough bandwidth with a 256 bit bus that they would with a 384 bit GDDR5 memory bus. These frees up die space which can be allocated to shaders and other resources which linearly scale performance. AMD needs to up the game or they will get into the same situation as the CPU division at AMD. the CPU division is just bleeding the company.

the last AMD 'malmental' was:
980BE @ 4.3GHz / 990FX / HD 6870

got tired of it getting housed by 'ms mental' and her i5-2400 stock settings.
then gave it (AM3+ rig) to my son after swapping the 6870 for a 560 SC.
now he has my old 2500K.

My daughter is rocking an E4500 and GS8400 in her rig. Relax though, she's only 3! tongue.gif

Latest rumor from something over on the rumor page is the 8000s will be a 7000 rehash for OEMs and mobiles or something, and Volcanic Islands will be 9000s on lower nm scale next Dec/Jan with any luck
