Quickest way to destroy HD data

Thread Starter
So I've been watching 'spy/action' movies like enemy of the state and some TV shows like the X files (the AI episode) or Breaking Bad where the protagonist is forced to destroy all data on the HD.

In most of these, the protagonist employes something over the top of course like a remote explosion or in Break Bad a giant magnet lol.

Anyways, it got me thinking. What are some realistic ways of destroying all HD data beyond recovery in a very short amount of time? So far I googled a home made EMP, a strong magnet?

Discuss, be as creative as you like and make sure that your idea actually destroys the data beyond repair. For example, Throwing the HD in water I'm assuming will not destroy the data? Throwing it in some acid might?

A good old hammer does the trick if you don't need the drive ever again. At work to destroy a hard drives data and for disposal, I open it up and scratch up the discs inside

Can't the data still be recovered partially in a forensics lab with this method?

Hammer then burn it. If you want to 110% ensure it cannot be accessed, nuke it. jk....

Highly unlikely, I power it up to get it spinning, and put a screwdriver to it to get it all good and scratched up.
For 2.5" laptop drives you can actually physically bend them and shatter the discs inside, or just take another hammer/screwdriver to it. It's easy to shatter the discs in laptop drives

I'd say a layer of thermite should be able to eat through a drive in 5-10 seconds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TobTlBp3yuk Relevant youtube video, 44 seconds of the video is watching the fuse, using a shorter fuse will result in shorter, read: quicker, burn.

Next time I have a hard drive to destroy I'll take a pickaxe to it and post pictures biggrin.gif

I would think that some explosives would be the quickest way to destroy the data.

But for best destruction redundancy I would think having all your "sensitive" data in a RAID0 array would be best. That way even if the drives could be partially recovered after an explosion, chances are the RAID split would still make the recovered data useless and broken.

So my ultimate plan would be to have a big RAID0 array, built into some form of strongbox, lined with high explosives. I wonder if that would turn the platters to powder headscratch.gif you know, just to be SURE tongue.gif
